POSITION SUMMARY
- Accountable for delivering direct nursing services to patients, while overseeing the daily nursing functions carried out by nursing aides. This oversight must align with existing Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, regulations, and facility protocols. The aim is to guarantee the utmost quality of care is upheld consistently.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold a valid, unrestricted license to practice as a RN or LPN in the State of Illinois and/or Wisconsin.
- Must have a current CPR certification or obtain it within two weeks of starting employment.
- Must possess knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures.
- Demonstrates interest and/or expertise in geriatric care.
- Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English clearly.
- Must have the capacity to make independent decisions when necessary.
- Must be able to interact tactfully with patients, families, visitors, staff, government representatives, and the general public.
- Must exhibit leadership and supervisory skills and a willingness to collaborate effectively with other staff members.
- Must be personable, enthusiastic, and resourceful.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to move throughout the facility during the workday.
- Must be able to manage the mental and emotional demands of the role.
- Must possess adequate sight/hearing abilities or utilize assistive devices to meet the requirements of this position.
- Must function independently, exhibit flexibility, personal integrity, and work effectively with patients, families, staff, and support agencies.
- Must maintain good overall health and demonstrate emotional resilience.
- Must be able to relate to and work with individuals who are ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally distressed, and at times, hostile.
- May need to lift, push, pull, and transport equipment, supplies, and patients weighing over fifty (50) pounds throughout the day.
- May be exposed to infectious materials, diseases, and conditions, including the (HIV) AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support directives from authorized personnel, which may involve working on different units, with various patients, and handling multiple tasks as assigned.
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, assess, and lead the nursing staff for a designated unit.
- Ensure all nursing procedures and protocols are adhered to according to established policies.
- Directly supervise and educate nursing staff on various topics to enhance job knowledge.
- Ensure all nursing staff comply with established departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress standards.
- Assist in formulating a written care plan for each patient that identifies their needs and concerns.
- Participate actively in patient care plan meetings as directed.
- Report any concerns or complaints from patients or their families to the Administrator.
- Provide guidance and discipline to nursing staff as needed.
- Conduct daily rounds to verify that nursing staff are fulfilling their responsibilities and that proper procedures are being followed. Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Create and maintain a warm, engaging, and positive atmosphere, ensuring a calm environment throughout the department.
- Engage in continuing education programs to enhance professional development.
- Recommend necessary equipment and supply needs to the Director of Nursing.
- Order medications and treatments as required, adhering to budgetary guidelines.
- Utilize 24-hour summaries to address recommendations and concerns related to patient care needs.
- Complete detailed accident and incident reports.
- Encourage physicians to review treatment plans and ensure documentation is completed in accordance with established policies.
- Document nursing notes in a clear and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided and the patient's response.
- Complete required assessments upon patient admission, transfer, and/or discharge.
- Receive and document telephone orders from physicians accurately.
- Record any new or modified diet orders and communicate this information to the Dietary Department.
- Perform routine charting duties as required and in accordance with established documentation policies.
- Oversee the completion of admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician.
- Review medication records for accuracy and completeness, ensuring adherence to stop order policies.
- Provide professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning, and care of wounds as necessary.
- Participate in orienting new patients and their families to the facility.
- Coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic services as ordered by the physician.
- Notify the attending physician and family of any changes in the patient's condition.
- Obtain lab tests as ordered.
- Record vital signs and other necessary assessments as required.
- Contact the physician for various nursing assessments and to report any significant findings.
- Ensure that nursing notes and monthly summaries accurately reflect the care plan and are being followed.
- Attend staff meetings and other relevant gatherings as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
