Job Summary:
The County of Los Angeles is seeking a highly skilled Ophthalmology Technician to join our team. As an Ophthalmology Technician, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and disorders of vision. You will work closely with ophthalmologists to perform a variety of diagnostic tests, including visual fields, intraocular tension measurements, and color vision examinations.
Responsibilities:
- Plot the field of both peripheral and central vision using instruments requiring accurate calibration.
- Measure intraocular tension with an applanation tonometer or MacKay/Marg tonometer.
- Examine for abnormalities of color vision with pseudoisochromatic plates or Ishihara or Rittler tests.
- Use a lensometer to neutralize lenses and to determine criteria for visual field testing.
- Maintain rapport with patients during long and uncomfortable examinations.
- Take case histories on ophthalmology patients and update patient charts with current treatment information.
- Prepare patients for examination, treatment, or surgery, and set out and pass instruments to the ophthalmologist.
- Clean ophthalmology instruments and observe for malfunctions, ensuring all instruments are properly calibrated.
- Assist the provider with examination and procedures as necessary.
- Perform formal visual field testing, optical coherence tomography scans, and other ophthalmic tests as needed.
- Provide information to patients and assist in educating, teaching, and encouraging the development of basic health habits and preventive care.
- Enter patient medical information into the electronic patient charting progress notes in the appropriate medical record.
Requirements:
- Successful completion of a recognized training program or two years of experience working with an ophthalmologist.
- PHYSICAL CLASS III Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching.
- Special Requirement Information: In order to receive credit for the required certificate under Selection Requirements, you must present a legible copy of the official certificate or official letter from the accredited institution within 15 calendar days of filing your application online.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Certification issued by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (www.jcahpo.org) at the level of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher.
