Position Overview
The Special Education Instructional Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting a certified educator by reinforcing educational content to individual students or small groups facing significant behavioral challenges within a classroom environment. This position employs intensive behavioral management techniques, intervention strategies, coping mechanisms, and problem-solving skills. Responsibilities include implementing instructional plans, monitoring student conduct, documenting activities and progress, and performing various related instructional support tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
A minimum of six months of relevant experience working with students with special needs in an educational or similar setting is essential.
Applicants must provide the following documentation with their application:
- Valid First Aid and Adult CPR certifications from a recognized organization, such as the Red Cross or American Heart Association. Online First Aid certifications are acceptable; however, the CPR certification must include hands-on training. The CPR certification must explicitly state that it was completed through hands-on or classroom training.
The examination process involves a review of completed applications, with candidates meeting the minimum qualifications participating in subsequent assessments. Please note that the components and weighting of the exams may be subject to change. The assessment includes a multiple-choice exam, weighted at 75%, and an essay exam, weighted at 25%.
This recruitment operates on an Open/Promotional basis. Candidates who successfully complete all assessments will be placed on one of two eligibility lists based on their overall exam scores. The Open eligibility list includes candidates not currently employed by SDUHSD, while the Promotional eligibility list comprises current employees. In cases where fewer than three ranks exist on the Promotional list, candidates from the Open list will be considered.
Veterans may qualify for preference points on entrance examinations. Candidates who are not current employees of the District are defined as entrance candidates. A copy of the DD214 must be attached to the application for veterans seeking preference.
Employment with the San Dieguito Union High School District is contingent upon the successful completion of a post-offer background check, fingerprinting, physical examination (including tuberculosis screening), drug and alcohol testing, and an Oath of Allegiance.
The probationary period for new or promoted employees is six months or 130 days of paid service, whichever is longer. Management personnel serve a probationary period of one year.
