Job Title: Medical Assistant

Job Summary:
Pacific Cancer Care is seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant to join our team. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality services.

Key Responsibilities:

Systems Management:

  • Utilize ONCO EMR to access patient information, review messages, and respond accordingly.
  • Identify pertinent personnel and forward messages as necessary.
Accurately document patient information, including medication administration, lab results, and patient teaching.

  • Access patient documents to review written or scanned documents.
  • Update Medical Administration Record (MAR) with medication orders, dose checks, and patient teaching.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient condition and disposition on discharge.

  • Navigate patient flowsheet to identify injection regimens, dosing parameters, and scheduling.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and print schedules as needed.
  • Record vitals, review medication lists, and verify smoking status.
  • Fax documents, print demographics, office notes, lab reports, and insurance cards.
  • Review patient medication lists and send prescriptions to designated pharmacies.
  • Open office notes (V12) for selected physicians and review symptoms (ROS).
  • Understand the importance of correct diagnosis codes (ICD-9) and locate them in patient charts.
Complete Injection Administration Competency Record, adhering to OSHA requirements and demonstrating knowledge of injection drugs, side effects, and safe handling procedures.

  • Demonstrate adherence to OSHA requirements.
  • Remove injections from vital path machines.
  • Knowledge of individual injection drugs' indications and side effects.
  • Report complications to RN as necessary.
  • Safe handling and administration of injections.
  • Knowledge of parameters to treat with lab values, vitals, and proper diagnosis (ICD-10 code).

Injections:

  • Administer subcutaneous, intramuscular injections, and skin tests intradermally.
  • Verbalize knowledge of commonly administered injections, including Procrit, Aranesp, Neupogen, Neulasta, Sandostatin, Faslodex, Lupron, B12, Hepatitis B, Flu vaccine, Pneumococcal, and Tuberculin.
  • Document in Altos MAR.
  • Patient and family teaching as necessary.

Department Process and Patient Flow:

  • Prepare exam rooms for the day.
  • Manage physicians and injection schedules efficiently.
  • Work effectively and efficiently.
Identify when to assist patients and colleagues, recognizing changes in patient condition and alerting appropriate personnel.

  • Recognize changes in patient condition and alert appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate efficiently with physicians and staff members from other departments.
  • Demonstrate appropriate technique when assisting with bone marrow procedures.
  • Translate for oncology department and physician patients (bilingual).
  • Provide 2nd MA check of injections as required.
  • Identify patients requiring gowns prior to physician entry.
  • Manage voice mail efficiently and forward messages appropriately.
  • Discharge patients in a timely manner.
Handle non-emergency calls to 911 and direct admissions to hospitals under physician direction.

  • Call 911 and provide information efficiently.
  • Print patient information and provide documentation for ambulance personnel.
  • Prepare patients for transfer via ambulance or car with family members.
  • Contact nursing supervisors at local hospitals to arrange direct admissions.

Assist RN with Telephone Triage:

  • Take messages from answering machines in complete and accurate detail.
  • Notify RN or physician of emergency calls.
  • Send non-urgent messages and text notes to appropriate personnel.

Procedure:

  • Prepare for bone marrow procedures, patient family education, and documentation.

Lab Coverage:

  • Adhere to OSHA requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of drawing blood efficiently.
  • Demonstrate safe handling of specimens.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of processing specimens efficiently.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of completing paperwork.

Physical Factors:
The physical abilities required for this position include:

Vision sufficient to read handwritten, typed, and computer documents throughout the shift
Speech and hearing sufficient to receive and communicate detailed information clearly by phone and in person
Motor skills sufficient to handle, use, or operate computer terminals, fax machines, copiers, telephones, needles, IVs,
Manual dexterity sufficient to use a variety of handheld tools and to manipulate single sheets of paper and/or file materials
Physical ability to reach, lift, and bend to retrieve and/or file materials
Physical ability to sit, stand, or remain stationary at work posts for long periods of time
Physical ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.
Physical ability to walk up and down one flight of stairs and between patient and departments throughout the day.

Current/Active Medical Assistant Certification required

Salary Range:
$18 - $27 Depending on Experience
