Position Overview: The University of Iowa Health Care, specifically within the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences - Institute for Vision Research, is in search of a dedicated Research Associate. This role is integral to the molecular biology research laboratory led by Edwin Stone, MD, PhD. The Research Associate will be responsible for conducting scientific experiments, managing laboratory equipment, and compiling research data.
Key Responsibilities:
- Extract DNA from biological samples and oversee the maintenance of a critical human DNA repository.
- Execute genetic experiments utilizing PCR methodologies to discover new mutations in previously uncharacterized genes.
- Conduct bi-directional sequencing and analyze the resulting data.
- Employ recombinant DNA techniques, including DNA and RNA purification, plasmid creation, and agarose gel electrophoresis.
- Input laboratory data into a laboratory information management system (LIMS) and Excel spreadsheets.
- Assist in the management of chemical and reagent inventories, ensuring a clean and organized laboratory environment.
- Provide instruction to students and residents on laboratory techniques and procedures.
- Perform literature reviews on topics as directed by the laboratory director.
Work Environment: This position is fully on-campus, contributing to a collaborative environment where over 12,000 staff, students, and volunteers work together to deliver exceptional healthcare services.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Qualifications:
- Required: A foundational understanding of molecular biology, typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Laboratory experience gained through academic coursework or professional employment.
- Proficiency in RNA and DNA isolation techniques.
- Experience with DNA manipulation, including cloning and plasmid preparation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with PCR methodologies.
- Proficient in using Macintosh systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and laboratory information management systems.
