Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Phlebotomy Specialist to join our team at Patterns LLC. As a Phlebotomy Specialist, you will be responsible for obtaining blood specimens from patients for laboratory analysis, observing protocols and methods established by our department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain blood specimens from patients using varied techniques on all age groups
  • Remove specimens from transport bags, verify proper identifiers on all requisitions, and promptly follow-up on discrepancies or omissions on paperwork or specimens
  • Enter ordered tests from outreach requisition into our HIS to ensure that the ancillary laboratory departments receive appropriate testing orders
  • Prioritize workload to ensure the timely processing of all specimens
  • Label and disseminate specimens to the proper laboratory department
  • Answer all incoming outreach telephone calls and respond in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner
  • Fax laboratory results to physician offices as requested
  • Document all outreach issues in the LIS for follow-up and resolution the next business day
  • Review the "Specimen Master Log" to ensure accuracy in the accessioning process
  • Compile all necessary supplies for outreach clients and document quantities in the LIS prior to delivery
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of necessary supplies using the LIS Material Management System
  • Complete ICD-10 diagnosis coding for all MLW outreach accounts by entering the appropriate code into the HIS
  • Contact and follow-up with physician offices for diagnosis and/or ICD-10 codes if not provided on the submitted requisition
  • Document phone conversation with physician office according to Medicare guidelines
  • Scan all coded requisitions into the ELR of the LIS
  • Perform STAT specimen pick-up at local physician office practices, as well as, dispatching contracted courier service
  • Sort, compile, and deliver laboratory reports to local physician office practices
  • Demonstrate knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures and their execution
  • Complete job-specific competency requirements
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, demonstrating ability to maintain a safe environment and use universal precaution
  • Ensure all client inquiries are responded to in a timely manner
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned
Requirements
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent required
  • 6 to 10 years previous phlebotomy experience required
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred
  • Valid NYS driver's license and proof of auto insurance required
  • Ability to type 35 words per minute
  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment required
  • Medical terminology preferred
  • Ability to use basic office equipment, basic computer skills, and knowledge of Meditech computer terminals a plus
