Position Overview:
Nusano is seeking a highly skilled Senior Safety Engineer with a robust background in the design and oversight of intricate high-tech systems associated with radiological or medical applications. The organization is pioneering an advanced, high-current particle accelerator and radioisotope production facility. The medical radioisotopes generated at this facility are critical for advancing cancer diagnostics, therapeutics, and treatments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage collaboratively within a diverse team of scientists and engineers.
- Work intimately with functional design teams to identify, analyze, and manage safety-related stakeholder requirements and technical specifications.
- Contribute to the formulation of technical specifications, interface control documents, and validation plans essential for safety compliance.
- Encourage a strong safety culture within design teams.
- Conduct comprehensive analyses on systems, subsystems, and components utilizing established safety methodologies such as hazard analysis, risk assessment, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and root cause analysis (RCA).
- Employ simulation and CAD tools to model potential accident scenarios and assess safety risks.
- Model radiological impacts and propose appropriate shielding measures using simulation and CAD tools.
- Assist in the development of a Personnel Protection System (PPS) and a Radiation Monitoring System.
- Establish and uphold organizational standards for hazard assessment, safety, and regulatory adherence, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance.
- Provide design input to enhance safety, usability, and error-proofing.
- Coordinate with the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) team to ensure final designs meet established safety standards.
- Participate in design evaluations, advocating for safety considerations.
- Contribute to the creation of installation procedures, commissioning plans, operational manuals, and other relevant documentation.
- Mentor and educate team members on safety best practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant engineering experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in safety engineering, particularly with radiological hazards, particle accelerators, or nuclear systems.
- Familiarity with safety or quality regulations, including Good Manufacturing Practices for pharmaceuticals or OSHA standards for ionizing radiation.
- Proven knowledge of best practices in hazard management and safety assurance.
- Proficient in digital productivity tools, including Microsoft Office.
- Exceptional attention to detail, technical expertise, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with root cause analysis, FMEA, and safety/risk assessments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher in Safety Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, RF Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Experience with Requirements Management, PLM, ERP, or QMS tools.
- Experience in developing and executing V&V test plans for safety requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, and similar analytical tools.
- Familiarity with particle accelerators or analogous technologies.
- Experience with radioactive material handling equipment such as hot cells and glove boxes.
- Experience with chemical separation technologies.
- Background in the production of pharmaceuticals or medical-grade products.
- Leadership experience is a plus.
- CSP credential and electrical safety experience are advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
- Comfortable working in a radiation-producing environment.
- Ability to work in both office and production settings.
- Capacity to sit for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks using a computer.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
