WSP is seeking a Junior Geographic Information Systems Specialist to join our team.
In this role, you will assist in providing local technical support for the collection, modeling, and analysis of geographical and tabular data to illustrate and identify spatial relationships relevant to client projects.
Your responsibilities may include aiding technical staff with spatial mapping, identifying patterns and trends, and developing mapping applications and tools that intersect data analysis, programming, and cartography.
You will produce precise and clear documentation, ensuring that tasks are completed with a quality level that meets or exceeds industry standards.
Engage in GIS database development, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and mapping as part of water resources and environmental services project teams.
Oversee individual project tasks related to GIS, database design, management, and data visualization.
Tailor GIS workflows and software applications for data collection, engineering, and environmental purposes.
Assist in conducting GIS surveys and generating reports from field sites for project research and investigations.
Uphold quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, documentation, and analysis of incoming and existing data.
Create and prepare topographic maps, graphs, and tabular data using GPS, aerial imagery, and other tools to ascertain precise locations of project areas and their environmental sensitivities.
Conduct basic professional GIS tasks involving investigations, inspections, studies, and surveys to gather further information related to digital mapping and the integration of topographical data with external datasets.
Contribute to the development of technical reports summarizing research findings and conclusions, ensuring documentation is complete, accurate, and concise.
Assist in researching and depicting the geography of project sites, and support public exhibits related to projects.
Collaborate with technical staff and project managers by providing input and analysis on low-level threat mitigation, master planning, and permitting activities.
Work alongside cross-functional teams, CADD, and other technicians to execute project tasks.
Complete training on assigned responsibilities.
Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.
Perform additional duties as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in GIS, Environmental Science, Planning, or a related discipline.
- 0 to 1 year of relevant post-education experience in the field, with prior GIS exposure.
- Familiarity with ESRI's ArcGIS platform.
- Experience with GIS field equipment, coordinate plotting, and data collection.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, effectively conveying ideas to both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve business objectives.
- Basic proficiency in business writing and office automation software.
- Flexibility to work schedules that align with project-specific requirements.
- Prior internship experience or relevant coursework.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on producing high-quality work.
The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
Preferred Qualifications
- Recent graduate from an accredited GIS, Environmental Science, Planning, or related program.
- Knowledge of FEMA RiskMAP Program.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as AutoCAD, Python, Visual Basic, Arcade, or SQL.
