Paramedic - Emergency Medical Technician

The EMT-Paramedic will be responsible for performing all department policies and procedures with demonstrated proficiency and competency, as required by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) for this level of licensure.
The practice of the Paramedic includes, but is not limited to:
- Diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as patient assessment, oxygen therapy, and drug administration.
- ECG monitoring, definitive airway care, and intravenous therapy.
- Phlebotomy, shock management, spinal cord and fracture management, patient triage and transportation, and communication skills.
All patient care will be provided in accordance with the Eastern Upper Peninsula Medical Control Authority (EUPMCA) protocols.
The EMT-Paramedic will require minimal first responders, EMT-Basics, and Advanced EMT. While responding to emergency situations will be the first priority, the employee may be requested to assist other facilities during slow periods of operation.
This will be coordinated with the EMS Service Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Vehicle operation, care, and maintenance.
- Patient history and assessment as outlined in EUPMCA protocols.
- Basic and advanced patient care as outlined in EUPMCA protocols.
- Patient transportation as outlined in EUPMCA protocols.
- Radio and written communication skills and techniques as outlined in EUPMCA protocols.
- Mass casualty assessment and triage.
- Scene safety and control.
- Operation of light equipment, extrication equipment, and patient disentanglement.
The EMT-Paramedic must attend all mandatory trainings designated through the EMS Coordinator.
Other duties may be assigned, such as staffing coordination, quality improvement, secretarial duties, service billing, safety/risk management functions, prevention, insurance processing, equipment and/or transportation needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical constraints of pre-hospital care require that all employees be able to:
- Pick up and carry 100lbs, individually in front of themselves, at least 125ft, up and down a flight of stairs, and load 300lbs (stretcher and patient) into the back of the ambulance.
- Have sufficient dexterity to climb stairs, ladders, squat, and kneel without jeopardizing themselves, their partner, and/or the patient.
- Visual acuity corrected to be able to read maps, medicine bottles, and/or ampules.
- Hearing ability corrected to be able to distinguish conversation during high levels of noise distraction.
Overall health must be such as not to cause potential risk to themselves, their partners, and/or the patient.
If on medication, the EMT-Paramedic must be able to demonstrate no acute reaction or medical incident related to their condition for a period of 12 months.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The EMT-Paramedic must meet the following requirements:
- Current applicable pre-hospital license in the State of Michigan, through MDHHS, which must be maintained throughout the duration of employment.
- Meet EUPMCA requirements as identified in EUPMCA protocols and be signed off.
- Be ACLS/PALS certified.
- Be able to organize work, set priorities, work well with others, and maintain confidentiality.
- Utilize effective communication mechanisms consistently.
- Be flexible regarding staffing needs to meet patient requirements.
- Have a valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record.
- Meet or exceed all physical requirements of the job.
- Have an excellent past work record.
To perform this position successfully, the EMT-Paramedic must be able to satisfactorily perform each function listed under the essential functions category of the position description.
