The Certified Phlebotomy Specialist plays a crucial role in executing blood collection procedures for patients across various age demographics, while providing essential technical assistance to the on-duty Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS).
Key Responsibilities- Conduct blood collection procedures on patients, including infants, children, adults, and seniors, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Perform instrument maintenance under the supervision of the CLS and manage order entry for requested tests using the laboratory's current ordering system.
- Process in-house specimens and prepare specimens for external laboratories, adhering to established hospital protocols.
- Download and manage reports from reference laboratories, ensuring accurate logging of receipt dates on reference lab manifests.
- Distribute reports to necessary locations and maintain organized filing of all reference lab, pre-employment, and confidential reports within the laboratory's system.
- Respond to telephone inquiries and assist clients with their questions, ensuring a high level of customer service.
- Collaborate with the CLS for technical inquiries and assist with laboratory maintenance and cleanliness.
This position involves handling blood and other potentially infectious materials, which may expose the technician to bloodborne pathogens and other hazardous elements. Adherence to safety protocols and compliance with Standard Precautions is mandatory.
QualificationsSuccessful candidates must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for patients of all ages. This includes:
- Understanding growth and development principles throughout the lifespan.
- Ability to assess patient data and interpret necessary information to meet individual patient needs.
- Collecting blood specimens through venous and capillary punctures, ensuring accurate identification of patients prior to collection.
- Completing computer functions accurately and efficiently, while adhering to National Patient Safety Goals.
The Certified Phlebotomy Specialist will be expected to maintain a professional demeanor, follow meal and rest period policies, and seek prior approval when necessary.
