Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinarian II to join our team as a Zoonosis Control Program Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Zoonosis Control (ZC) Program, including supervising, planning, and evaluating the work of the ZC staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the regional ZC program, including supervising, planning, and evaluating the work of the ZC staff.
  • Perform advanced veterinary and epidemiological work, directing veterinary public health activities, and consulting with program staff, physicians, veterinarians, local government officials, health department officials, and the general public on zoonotic diseases, disease control, vector/food borne illness, and animal control issues.
  • Coordinate with the ZC Branch, other regional program managers, and local health departments in the prevention, detection, and control of zoonotic, vector/food borne, and communicable diseases.
  • Perform public health disease and disaster response activities, working under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent professional judgment.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of veterinary medicine, animal and human disease prevention and control methods and procedures, zoonotic diseases, disease outbreak investigation and control measures, epidemiology, techniques used in specimen collection and testing, state and federal zoonotic disease control rules and regulations, methods, and practices.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and/or oversee the work of others, plan and direct program activities, plan disease control methods and procedures, promote zoonotic disease control programs, advise pet owners, medical professionals, local health officials, and others on disease control methods and procedures, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to make professional evaluations and judgments impacting the health of humans, pets, and livestock, handle conflict in a professional manner, train, coach, and mentor others.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in veterinary public health, epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of state and federal zoonotic disease control rules and regulations, methods, and practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including pet owners, medical professionals, local health officials, and others.
Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment, requiring strong organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

The position requires safe operation of a state-owned vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct state business, and an acceptable driving record must be maintained in accordance with DSHS Policy OS-, Fleet Operations and Management & Procedures and standards developed by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The position also requires attendance at work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performance of other duties as assigned.
