Position Overview:

The Surgical Services Technician will assist in surgical procedures including cesarean sections and support during vaginal deliveries.

Under the guidance of a registered nurse, the Surgical Services Technician is responsible for various essential tasks within the obstetric department. These include maintaining a well-organized environment, stocking labor and recovery rooms, ensuring equipment functionality through quality control checks, and assisting medical staff during operative and delivery room procedures. The role also encompasses fundamental responsibilities aimed at ensuring patient care, comfort, and safety, along with clerical support. The technician will perform scrubbing duties for surgical interventions such as cesarean sections, emergency hysterectomies, postpartum tubal ligations, dilation and curettage, cerclage procedures, and fetal intervention surgeries. Additionally, the technician will participate in high-risk cesarean deliveries and trauma cases involving pregnant patients. Reporting to the Labor and Delivery Leadership, Charge Nurses, and on-duty RNs is essential. Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Prior experience as a Surgical Technician or OB Technician is highly desirable.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required, along with one of the following: graduation from a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited Medical Assistant Program (Associate, Diploma, or Certificate), or completion of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited Surgical Technologist Program (Associate, Diploma, or Certificate), or certification as a CNA or LPN. For those in the position prior to the specified cutoff, a minimum of two years' clinical experience may suffice.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Proficiency in basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is essential.

Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterile techniques, and effective communication with nursing and medical staff is required.

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

One of the following is mandatory: State of Wisconsin licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse, State of Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Certification; or completion of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited Medical Assistant Program, or completion of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited Surgical Technologist Program. Additionally, certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association or an equivalent is required within 90 days of hire.
