The Associate Professor, Biomedical Education will be integral in the design, execution, and delivery of essential histology, cytology, anatomy, and pathology content within the School of Medicine's pre-clerkship curriculum. This role will particularly focus on managing interactive histology laboratory sessions as part of a highly integrated active-learning framework. The Associate Professor will also mentor students, participate in various committees, and engage in independent research and scholarship as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for an Associate Professor, Biomedical Education at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Contributing to the medical education program, which features an integrated curriculum that allows students to tailor their fourth year following a comprehensive three-year core curriculum. This curriculum promotes lifelong learning and active learning methodologies.
  • Overseeing the histology curriculum, which is a vital component that highlights structure-function relationships through integrated perspectives of cell biology and physiology.
  • Participating in the development of additional integrated pathology and laboratory medicine experiences for students.
  • Providing service to the School of Medicine and engaging in professional committees and communities.
  • Actively involved in curriculum assessment and enhancement. Advising students as needed.
  • Assisting with various accreditation activities.
  • Engaging in research and scholarship to further medical education and scientific understanding.
  • Performing other academic duties and responsibilities aligned with rank and experience.
  • Completing additional tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Upholding organizational competencies and standards of conduct.

Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possession of a terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., D.O.) in a basic or clinical science discipline.
  • Expertise in one or more areas such as Histology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Immunology/Microbiology, or Anatomy/Neuroanatomy.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching within undergraduate medical education or related health science environments.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency as a digital anatomic pathologist.
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting and in teaching medical students in subjects like anatomy and pathology.
  • Familiarity with team-based, problem-based, and case-based learning methodologies in both large and small group settings.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity (e.g., publications, patents, grant funding, research) in a relevant field.
  • Proven ability to effectively implement active learning strategies.
  • Experience in developing integrated medical science course materials for undergraduate medical students in both preclinical and clinical phases.
  • Skills necessary to contribute to the ongoing development of a medical sciences department at a new allopathic medical school.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and the establishment of new medical schools.
