CLASSIFICATION OVERVIEW
(SWS I)
Under general supervision, the Social Services Team Leader I is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing the activities of social service and employment personnel who provide essential information and referral services, protective services for adults, in-home support, child welfare services, emergency response initiatives, and employment assistance. This role involves additional related responsibilities as necessary.
The Social Services Team Leader I represents the initial supervisory tier within the classification series. This position is distinct from the Social Worker IV role, as it serves as the primary supervisor.

In this capacity, the Social Services Team Leader II operates under general supervision, tasked with planning, organizing, and directing the work of social service staff delivering advanced social services. This role also encompasses other related responsibilities as required. A Master's degree is a prerequisite for this position.
Individuals in this role supervise a team of caseworkers managing complex and sensitive cases, often assigned to programs necessitating extensive casework expertise. In larger departments, some positions may focus entirely on in-service training and staff development.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
(SWS I) The Social Services Team Leader I typically receives guidance from a Program Manager or equivalent management level. This position supervises a diverse group of social workers, clerical, and technical staff, but does not oversee employees in roles requiring a master's degree.
(SWS II) The Social Services Team Leader II receives direction from a Program Manager or similar management level and provides direct supervision to lower-level social workers, including Social Worker IVs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

- Planning, assigning, supervising, coaching, and reviewing the work of staff engaged in delivering social and employment services.
- Consulting with and guiding social workers in providing support and counseling to clients with specialized needs.
- Reviewing and approving documentation related to cases, including court reports and placements.
- Addressing and documenting client concerns and complaints.
- Selecting, training, evaluating, and disciplining subordinate staff.
- Facilitating communication between staff and management regarding departmental expectations and policy changes.
- Authorizing the provision of social services and making referrals to other agencies.
- Maintaining effective working relationships with clients, staff, and community organizations.
(SWS II)
- Planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of employees managing advanced casework, such as protective services.
- Consulting with social workers to provide guidance on complex cases.
- Reviewing and approving documentation related to sensitive cases.
- Developing community resources for various programs.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of policies and procedures.
- Ensuring all services are delivered respectfully and in compliance with legal standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:

- Two years of experience in a supervisory role within social services, along with a Master's degree in Social Work or a related field.
