Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Correctional Deputy/Dispatcher to join our team at the County of Trinity, CA. As a Correctional Deputy/Dispatcher, you will be responsible for providing support to the Sheriff's Department in a variety of roles, including correctional duties and emergency dispatching.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the supervision of inmates in the County Detention Facility
  • Oversee inmates during leisure time activities and on work details
  • Check work areas to ensure inmates are working on assigned projects
  • Conduct periodic block checks and maintain discipline among inmates
  • Learn procedures and perform searches of inmates, cells, and other areas for contraband
  • Respond to inquiries regarding inmate detention and Detention Facility policies
  • Learn to receive and book inmates, fingerprint, and take photographs
  • Assign prisoners to cells according to the Facility classification plan
  • Release prisoners on proper authorization, returning personal property and clothing
  • Testify in court and before disciplinary boards
  • Deliver pre-packaged medications according to specific instructions
  • Investigate incidents and violations of rules at the facility for disciplinary reports and possible citation or arrest
  • Collect and secure evidence
  • Transport inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other institutions
  • Supervise inmates and visitors during visiting hours
  • Serve warrants
  • Operate a centralized control system controlling access and movement in the Facility
  • Answer the telephone, receiving and classifying calls
  • Learn and exercise basic responsibility in determining priority of response and dispatching appropriate Emergency Medical and other Public Safety units
  • Maintain field communications for public safety checks and during emergencies and incidents
  • Transfer emergency calls to other agencies as warranted
  • Monitor various public safety radio channels and coordinate efforts in dispatching personnel and equipment
  • Maintain records/logs of calls for services, radio transmissions, and telephone messages using the computer
  • Establish chain of custody/evidence of communications dispatcher records
  • Enter and clear information on the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (CLETS) to assist personnel with calls
  • Operate the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
  • Send, receive, and decode teletype information
  • Enter and track restraining orders into local, state & national data base systems
  • Coordinate interagency law enforcement communications using telephone radio and computer with emergency medial and public safety activities
  • Process warrants
  • Update daily dispatching logs
  • Perform a wide variety of general office assistance assignments
  • Operate dispatching, office equipment, and computers
  • Provide information to other staff and the public
Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of correctional procedures and inmate control problems
  • Good public relations techniques
  • First aid methods and techniques
  • The general geography of Trinity County
  • Modern office methods and procedures
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous work experience with a correctional system or in a position having substantial public contact
  • One (1) year of previous professional law enforcement experience comparable to that of a Correctional Deputy/Dispatcher I in Trinity County
Special Requirements
  • Completion of a Basic Jail Operations Course approved by S.T.C. within 12 months of initial employment
  • Completion of P.C. 832 and weapons training within 12 months of initial employment
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver's License
  • Completion of the Basic Dispatcher Course and possession of a Dispatcher Certification from P.O.S.T.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office and outdoor environment. Work is performed in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. Unusual exposure to life-threatening situations. Continuous contact with inmates, other staff, and the public.
