Principal Materials Engineer

At SpaceX, we're pushing the boundaries of space exploration and development. As a Principal Materials Engineer, you'll play a critical role in designing and developing the materials that will enable our ambitious goals.
Responsibilities:- Champion new material technologies for Starlink satellites, from conceptualization to production stabilization.
- Work closely with partner teams to define design criteria, evaluate material properties, and roll out optimized solutions.
- Perform rigorous reliability testing of new material technologies and iterate as needed to ensure robustness and survivability in harsh environments.
- Solve complex technical problems and identify innovative solutions through rapid iteration and learning.
- Conduct root cause investigations of material-related failures and drive down root cause to first principles mechanisms.
- Participate in hardware design reviews to provide input on materials and processes in new designs.
- Regularly perform satellite production process walk-downs and identify opportunities for new material and/or process developments.
- Bachelor's degree in Material Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of professional experience in electronic materials, polymers, space survivable coatings, EEE packaging, RF-transparent materials, and/or joining technologies.
- Strong expertise in various manufacturing processes and high volume manufacturability and assembly.
- Experience with technical review of materials and characterization techniques.
