Job Title: Dental Assistant

Job Summary:

A full-time, non-exempt position responsible for assisting dentists and dental hygienists in providing primary care dental services to patients. The Dental Assistant is also responsible for sterilization, preparation, and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with resolving minor difficulties, answering questions, and providing directions as authorized by the dentist or dental hygienist.
  • Act as a chair-side assistant for dentists and dental hygienists.
  • Prepare operatory for patient treatment according to Dental Department protocols and the dentist's or dental hygienist's directions.
  • Perform independent procedures as delegated and directed by the dentist in accordance with state regulation and law and Dental Department directive and protocol.
  • Maintain Dental Department equipment according to manufacturer's directions and Dental Department policy and protocol.
  • Maintain all Dental Department areas in compliance with Dental Department directives and protocols as well as center policies and procedures relative to infection control, exposure control, and safety issues.
  • Maintain adequate operatory supplies and compile a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes.
  • Maintain a list of all Dental Department patients, monitor patient flow, and assist the Dental Director, dentists, and dental hygienists in ensuring that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed and filed.
  • Receive and place necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinic business, and patient care of the Dental Department.
  • Assist with various clinical and administrative functions of the center as appropriate and time permits.
  • Ensure the sterility of all reusable dental instruments and equipment according to Dental Department directive and protocol.
  • Ensure the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials according to Dental Department directive, center policy, and state and federal regulation.
  • Perform all functions in full compliance with the center's and the Dental Department Exposure Control Plan, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment and Universal Precautions.
  • Participate in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site as required.
  • Travel when necessary to meet operational needs.
  • Perform other related and/or necessary tasks as directed by a supervisor to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Assist with dental charting during exams and explaining treatment plans to patients.
  • Assist with ensuring patients have all necessary forms, such as referral forms, medical clearance forms, and prescriptions.
  • Assist with providing oral instructions after procedures such as extractions, fillings, and exams.

Processing Denture Orders:

  • Monitor and document the flow of prosthetic laboratory cases.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited school for Dental Assisting training required.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Must be currently certified as a Dental Assistant in the state of Pennsylvania.
  • Two years of dental assisting experience.
  • Ability to attend to multiple tasks at the same time and prioritize assignments and responsibilities to ensure compliance with established deadlines and protocols.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information is required.
  • Must have knowledge in the computer and basic knowledge of database software.
