Job Overview

Position Summary

The individual in this role is tasked with carrying out essential labor and maintenance activities to ensure the proper upkeep of County roadways, parks, and associated facilities. This position serves as an entry-level opportunity within the maintenance classification series, where employees engage in tasks that do not necessitate extensive prior experience or advanced skill sets. Many responsibilities are routine and can be performed effectively under general supervision once learned.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are illustrative of the various types of work performed and are not exhaustive:

  • Maintains the grounds of County facilities, including mowing, weed removal, and hedging; applies fertilizers and chemical treatments as necessary; prunes and replaces trees, shrubs, and plants; utilizes a backpack blower to clear debris from parking lots and surrounding areas.
  • Ensures the maintenance of County right-of-way areas through mowing, weed clearing, and hedging.
  • Oversees the upkeep of County drainage systems, including cleaning ditches and other drainage structures; employs manual and power tools as required for stormwater management and construction tasks.
  • Performs minor plumbing tasks in restrooms; cleans and stocks supplies in park facilities and gyms; collects litter.
  • Conducts maintenance on small engines and equipment; changes oil and blades on mowers; sharpens blades; checks fluid levels and tire pressure; lubricates equipment.
  • Cleans power tools using appropriate chemicals and materials; maintains pool filtration and chemical systems. Assembles and installs recreational and playground equipment, including fences and gates.
  • Executes minor electrical tasks such as installing light switches, hanging fixtures, and replacing bulbs. Paints equipment, fences, and buildings as needed.
  • Operates light-duty vehicles.
  • Implements traffic control measures at construction sites.
  • Assembles and installs erosion control measures to safeguard the environment and work zones. Prepares athletic fields for games by marking boundaries; drags and chalks softball fields. Applies mulch or pine straw to landscaped areas as required.

Additional Responsibilities:

Employees in this classification may be required to perform related duties as assigned by appropriate authority.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the policies, procedures, activities, and organizational structure of the assigned department.
  • Basic understanding of manual maintenance work methods, procedures, tools, equipment, and tasks.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Understanding of and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Capability to lift and handle heavy objects over short distances and lighter items over longer distances.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Willingness to learn job-related information primarily through on-the-job training via oral instructions and observation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public.

Working Environment

This position primarily involves outdoor work, with exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, water, machinery with moving parts, and potential prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions. Use of protective equipment such as gloves and safety vests may be necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Some experience in general labor work is preferred.
