The Landscape Maintenance Specialist plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive grounds and building services to maintain a safe, inviting, and visually appealing environment for all university community members. This position involves a variety of essential labor tasks, including but not limited to, landscape upkeep, snow and ice management, room clear-outs, furniture relocations, and the handling of materials and equipment. The specialist operates university vehicles and utilizes machinery related to landscaping, snow management, and general upkeep. Work is conducted in diverse settings such as outdoor areas, rooftops, and confined spaces, often under varying weather conditions and during emergency scenarios like flooding or snowstorms. This role reports directly to the Grounds Foreman and the Field Operations and Warehouse Manager (FOWM).REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
Candidates interested in the Landscape Maintenance Specialist position should possess a range of skills and experiences, particularly in arboriculture, focusing on tree care, pruning, and maintenance. Responsibilities include planting and mowing, necessitating proficiency in operating various equipment such as mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and small tractors. Safety awareness is paramount, and adherence to protocols when handling machinery and working outdoors is essential. Relevant experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or arboriculture is a prerequisite for this role.
COMMUNICATION AND CUSTOMER SERVICE
This position emphasizes high-quality customer service to maintenance and facilities, students, faculty, and staff. It is vital to respond proactively to concerns, identify potential issues, and escalate them to the Grounds Foreman or FOWM as necessary. Effective communication with management, team members, and colleagues is essential for achieving positive outcomes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The work environment includes outdoor settings, rooftops, and mechanical spaces, with approximately 70% of the time spent outdoors. Candidates must be prepared for varying work conditions and schedules, including evenings, weekends, and emergency overtime as required. Physical capabilities must include:
- Walking extensive distances across campus.
- Lifting and moving loads up to 100 lbs.
- Bending and kneeling for extended periods.
- Working outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Climbing stairs and ladders.
- Entering and working in confined spaces.
CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
Candidates must possess or be willing to obtain the following certifications:
- Forklift operator certification (required).
- Aerial lifts certification (preferred).
- OSHA 10-hour safety training (required).
- Confined space training (required).
- Fall protection training (required).
- A valid driver's license (required).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Landscape Maintenance Specialist will be responsible for:
