Job Description:

As a Vacuum Design Engineer II - High Vacuum Systems, you will analyze customer requirements to design components, chambers, and systems for the vacuum market segment. You will understand and/or perform design calculations to ensure vacuum chamber and weldments meet functional requirements.

You will work in a fast-paced environment and cooperate with operations, sourcing, quality, project management to meet and exceed customer expectations as required to support sales effort and overall business goals.

A successful candidate will balance various aspects of the project, including safety, cost, manufacturability. Additionally, you will research advanced technology regarding best practices in the field of high precision stainless steel manufacturing related to the vacuum market segment and find cost-effective solutions.

You will provide input into make versus buy decisions for components within a system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create designs, specifications, models, bills of material, and manufacturing drawings along with a team of other engineers and drafters.
  • Coordinate efforts with production to ensure that the design meets manufacturability capabilities, including tolerance stack-up and surface finish.
  • Evaluate and validate designs to ensure they meet customer or regulatory requirements.
  • Build prototypes if needed, for testing and approval.
  • Review customer models and drawings for missing or incorrect information required in producing the customer's part through to completion.
  • Create solid models or update models provided by customers.
  • Modify existing designs or products to improve their performance or integrate new technology.
  • Perform engineering calculations to size components and process equipment to meet performance requirements.
  • Interact with customers up front during the quotation phase to better understand requirements.
  • Collaborate with the quality assurance team to define a quality/inspection plan and ensure required quality standards are adhered to.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers to develop production plans and purchase necessary articles/buyouts.
  • Work closely with production supervisors and shop personnel to improve designs through effective communication and coordination.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and promote a team approach throughout the Department.
  • Ensure a favorable Company image is presented to customers and all customer relationships are based on honesty and integrity.

Requirements:

A minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment related to vacuum equipment or vacuum processing is required. A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Machine Design, or Process Design is preferred. Alternatively, an Associate's degree in a relevant field with 10 years of experience may be considered.

The ideal candidate will have experience with ultra-high vacuum product design and manufacturing, direct experience and capabilities for design and manufacture of custom components, chambers, and process systems, and knowledge of ASME calculations.

Solid experience with product design and manufacturing, specifically Design For Manufacturing (DFM), is essential. Proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, and knowledge of GD&T principles are strongly preferred. Experience with customer interaction, working under time constraints, and software/engineering controls is beneficial.
