Job Overview

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Animal Care Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of animals by providing top-notch veterinary services that help them achieve their best possible recovery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare for surgical procedures, manage patient flow, and comply with safety protocols.
  • Administer pre-medications, induce anesthesia, intubate, monitor anesthesia levels, and evaluate anesthetic risks.
  • Dispense medications and vaccinations as prescribed by the Veterinarian.
  • Assess reported medical issues, monitor the health of all animals, and communicate findings to the Clinic Manager.
  • Facilitate the admission and discharge processes for patients, ensuring clear communication of post-operative care instructions.
  • Collect laboratory samples, including urine, blood, feces, and skin scrapings.
  • Perform dental cleanings, including scaling and polishing of teeth.
  • Prepare samples for external testing or conduct in-house diagnostics, while maintaining laboratory logs and equipment.
  • Execute all treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation in treatment, surgical, and examination areas.
  • Assemble surgical packs in preparation for procedures.
  • Carry out routine kennel responsibilities, including walking, feeding, medicating, and cleaning.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Proficient in intravenous injections and intubation for surgical procedures.
  • Possess excellent reflexes and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare and humane treatment.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing shifting priorities and tasks.
  • Utilize appropriate safety measures when handling difficult or feral animals.
  • Work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Recognize and interpret animal behavior, including signs of aggression or fear.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

EXPERIENCE PREFERENCES

  • Prior experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting is preferred.
  • Experience in shelter medicine is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with animal handling, restraint, and health assessments.
  • Experience in administering intravenous injections and intubating animals.
  • Some background in anesthesia and surgical procedures is beneficial.
  • Experience with large animal care is a plus.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A valid driver's license is necessary.

CLASSIFICATION

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

POSITION TYPE

This is a full-time role, with typical working hours from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Due to the nature of the industry, employees may need to work varied schedules to meet operational needs, including weekends and holidays. Attendance at training sessions and meetings is mandatory.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel may be required to local rescues and community clinics.
