Position Summary
The role of a Shoreman involves essential manual labor at various fill site project locations. The Shoreman is responsible for executing tasks related to the operation of the fill site, including the use of support and project site equipment. This position requires close collaboration with the Fill Site Foremen and other skilled personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage in a range of strenuous manual labor activities associated with large-scale construction projects.
- Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools to minimize risks of injury and property damage.
- Maintain a tidy job site by securing tools and equipment daily to prevent potential hazards.
- Handle and store materials efficiently.
- Assist the crew in excavation tasks, which may include hoisting materials, preparing work sites, digging trenches, and managing waste materials.
- Perform additional duties as required by the supervisor.
- Participate in safety and environmental initiatives to ensure compliance with regulations and enhance company programs.
- Take personal responsibility for safety and the safety of colleagues.
- Have the authority to halt work if unsafe conditions are observed and report issues to the supervisor.
- This position may require extended work away from home at remote project sites.
Qualifications and Skills
A minimum of six months to one year of relevant experience or training is required to develop the necessary skills for construction labor.
Preferred: One year of experience as a Shoreman in the dredging sector.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Knowledge of construction labor practices and materials, demonstrating proficiency in the role.
- Familiarity with various types of marine equipment and tools.
- Effective communication skills with team members and supervisors.
- Competencies in stress management, teamwork, and a results-oriented approach.
Physical and Mental Requirements
The candidate must be capable of performing essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Additionally, the individual must be able to wear and utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including hard hats, safety glasses, life vests, and other protective gear.
Shoremen should also be able to:
- Move across varying heights and access points on the job site.
- Stand, bend, crouch, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
- Lift and carry weights up to 70 lbs and exert force of up to 150 lbs.
- Climb stairs and ladders exceeding 6 ft in height.
- Work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
- Adapt to changing temperatures and outdoor conditions, including exposure to dust, moisture, noise, and vibration.
The company expects all employees to adhere to safety protocols as outlined in training and to actively contribute to maintaining a safe work environment. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for all team members.
