Job Responsibilities:
The Cytogenetics Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is looking for a Cytogenetics Technologist to execute karyotype and FISH procedures alongside innovative molecular techniques aimed at identifying novel genetic and clinically significant chromosome and molecular biomarkers.
The Cytogenetics Technologist will collaborate with the team to conduct conventional cytogenetics, FISH, and various microarray testing protocols on diverse tumor sample types.
This role necessitates hands-on laboratory experience and a solid understanding of molecular cytogenetics.
Your Responsibilities Include:
1. Conduct cytogenetic analysis of specimens received by the laboratory under general supervision.
2. Initiate cultures, harvest samples, and analyze chromosomes with minimal guidance.
3. Identify standard cytogenetic abnormalities.
4. Complete diagnostic reports while ensuring quality work within set timeframes.
5. Execute laboratory bench work in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures.
6. Thoroughly review all test requests for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential issues.
7. Adhere to unidirectional specimen handling to prevent contamination.
8. Assist in maintaining commonly used equipment and troubleshoot minor issues.
9. Operate equipment carefully and in compliance with procedures.
10. Perform essential equipment checks, performance testing, preventive maintenance, and quality control as per laboratory guidelines.
11. Ensure equipment and instruments meet performance standards.
12. Verify requisitions and labels; accurately record patient information.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related life sciences field with experience in a Cytogenetics laboratory, with a preference for candidates with 1 year of experience in chromosomal microarray (SNP-Array and/or aCGH).
Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday, 10 AM - 6 PM, with flexibility to accommodate Tuesday to Saturday upon request.
Rotating Saturdays approximately every 6 weeks.
