Genetic Counselor Specialist

Job Summary:The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting patients and their families in understanding genetic illnesses, as well as serving as an educator and resource person for other healthcare professionals and the general public.
Key Responsibilities:- Provides genetic counseling for patients and their families who are at high risk of having genetic disorders.
- Interviews patients and their families to review family history, assess medical conditions, and provides individualized risk assessment.
- Directs patients and their families to appropriate community agencies for long-term care or long-term follow-up counseling.
- Collaborates effectively as a member of the healthcare team and takes initiative and leadership as appropriate.
- Attends treatment planning conferences/case conferences, establishes referral systems, and develops disease-specific counseling materials.
- Develops educational programs and protocols for medical students and residents, genetics fellows, and genetics counseling students.
- Masters Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program.
- Board certification as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
- At least six (6) years professional experience as a practicing genetic counselor.
- Cardiac genetic counseling experience is preferred.
- Experience working with multicultural audiences is preferred.
