Job Title: Structural Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Structural Engineer to join our team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for leading structural engineering activities related to building modifications, neutron science instrument shielding, concrete design, and utility and process equipment support fixtures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead structural engineering activities, including building modifications, neutron science instrument shielding, concrete design, and utility and process equipment support fixtures.
  • Prepare engineering reports, studies, calculations, reviews, and approvals of internal drawings and calculations.
  • Perform structural analysis, including seismic qualifications.
  • Perform facility walk-downs to inspect structures, systems, and components (SSCs) for verification and/or damage/defects and provide engineered solutions as needed.
  • Work with drafting personnel and provide direction on design drawings for fabrication of SSCs.
  • Define design criteria, develop technical specifications, and review/approve submittals from outside architect/engineer services.
  • Prepare engineering studies for scoping future projects and support development of estimates for management.
  • Provide technical field support and inspections for installation and maintenance activities.
  • Develop technical design documents, including drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for new construction, facility modifications, and improvements.
  • Provide sketches and drawings in CAD, using AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Collaborate with other fields during the design process to ensure constructability and operability of integrated systems.
  • Review designs produced by subcontractor A/E firms, including equipment selection.
  • Oversee and periodically inspect installations to ensure they meet design criteria and applicable codes and standards.
  • Follow environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Requirements:
  • BS degree in structural engineering (or civil with concentration in structures, or related engineering field) under an ABET accredited engineering curriculum.
  • A minimum of five years of proven structural engineering experience.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in material designs such as structural steel, stainless steel, concrete, and masonry.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS degree in structural or civil engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in state of Tennessee.
  • Working knowledge of the IBC/IEBC and their suite of referenced codes and standards.
  • Working knowledge of structural finite element modeling programs (STADD, GT STRUDL, etc.).
  • Familiarity with the following DOE order and standards:
  • DOE O 420.1C - Facility Safety
  • DOE-STD Natural Phenomena Hazards Analysis and Design Criteria for DOE Facilities
  • DOE-STD Configuration Management
  • DOE-STD Integration of Safety into the Design Process
  • Familiarity with working at a DOE national laboratory.
  • Experience with Autodesk Design Software (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM) or equivalent.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Tools (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.
