A Day in the Life:
- Collaborating with the project manager to assemble earthwork teams and devise a strategy for executing site grading in coordination with utility crews or other contractors present.
- Implementing the strategy to adhere to project timelines and budget constraints. The supervisor will be responsible for establishing cuts and fills, planning transportation routes, maintaining access roads, and liaising with inspectors to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Conducting rough and fine grading as required to meet project standards.
- Documenting and monitoring production quantities and comparing them against estimated costs to achieve or surpass the planned profit margin.
- Coordinating with the project manager to schedule personnel and equipment to optimize utilization rates.
- Engaging with suppliers and subcontractors related to grading and earthwork, including aggregate suppliers and blasting contractors.
- Maintaining an understanding of relevant plans, specifications, contractual obligations, and schedules, while communicating progress or issues with the project manager.
- Ensuring the safety of all personnel on site by adhering to all applicable safety regulations and procedures.
- Performing additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of five years of experience in heavy civil construction.
- Excellent verbal communication skills for effective interaction with team members, colleagues, and inspectors.
- Strong organizational abilities, responsible for timekeeping, equipment tracking, quantity monitoring, and contributing to schedule development.
- Interpersonal skills to manage diverse personalities, leading, motivating, and educating teams while fostering a positive work environment.
- Ability to read and interpret grading plans, specifications, and geotechnical data.
- Experience with various equipment types, from on-road trucks to heavy machinery, and small to large grading crews.
- Familiarity with grade checking methods to ensure compliance with project plans using tools such as GPS, rotating lasers, stakes, and cut sheets.
- Basic understanding of production forecasting and measurement for different equipment configurations.
- Knowledge of GPS technology as it relates to grading operations.
- Understanding of drilling and blasting processes in relation to earthwork.
