Job Overview

The University of Minnesota is seeking to appoint 1 to 2 postdoctoral researchers to engage in a collaborative initiative focused on the optical properties of organic semiconductor materials. This position is situated within the Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidates will be involved in:
  1. Engineering the optical characteristics of both crystalline and polycrystalline organic semiconductor materials, including birefringence and polarization behavior.
  2. Conducting structural analysis through X-ray diffraction and ellipsometry of anisotropic materials.
  3. Performing electrical and optical assessments, particularly concerning OLEDs and light polarization.
  4. Simulating and modeling optical phenomena in anisotropic media.

Research Environment

Postdoctoral associates will collaborate with the Frisbie and Holmes research teams, gaining access to advanced instrumentation for the growth and characterization of organic materials and devices. Facilities include:
  • Multiple film deposition systems
  • Crystal growth apparatus
  • Electrical and spectroscopic characterization tools
  • Force microscopes and probe stations
  • A nanoimprinter and aerosol jet printer

Additionally, the Minnesota Nano Center and the Materials Characterization Facility offer extensive resources for research.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates should demonstrate independence, strong organizational skills, and effective communication abilities. A PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field is required. Candidates should be eager to thrive in a dynamic interdisciplinary setting.

Qualifications

Required:
  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or Chemistry.
  • Experience with organic semiconductor thin films and devices.

Preferred:
  • Expertise in the fabrication and characterization of organic semiconductor thin films.
  • Strong understanding of the optical properties of organic semiconductor thin films and molecular orientation.
  • Experience with table-top optics and spectroscopy.
