We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our team at the Newport News Sheriff's Office. As a Registered Nurse, you will provide comprehensive medical care to inmates detained in the Newport News City Jail and Annex.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide medical treatment to inmates, including assessing individual medical complaints and administering appropriate treatment.
  • Perform daily sick calls and coordinate inmates' special dietary needs with dietary personnel.
  • Ensure proper dispersion and destruction of unused prescription medications and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Perform physical examinations on all inmates, including basic physical assessments, mental status examinations, and substance abuse assessments.
  • Stipulate physical referrals to local health agencies and arrange for transport of inmates to outside appointments.
  • Serve as primary liaison to hospitals, mental health facilities, detention facilities, pharmacies, medical supply companies, health insurance companies, and local health department.
  • Supervise non-medical staff in areas of administering medication and treatments.
  • Maintain medical records on each inmate, including medical history, current physical and mental status, immunization record, and history of communicable diseases.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • 3-5 years of experience in providing medical care and treatment for various types of illnesses and injuries.
  • Supervisory experience and/or experience in a correctional and/or psychiatric nursing environment preferred.
  • Acceptable comprehensive background investigation, including a local, state, and sex offender criminal history check, as well as FBI Fingerprinting.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Pre-employment substance abuse testing and random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
  • Valid license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), certification in CPR, and multi-media First Aid.
Working Conditions:

This position requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Some lifting may be required, including overhead lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including odors, hazardous materials, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate individuals.
