Job Title: Public Health Nurse

Fenway Health is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Public Health Nurse to join our team. As a Public Health Nurse, you will provide nursing services to two priority populations: People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) and gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women.

The successful candidate will use a harm reduction and trauma-informed approach to provide specialized nursing support and HIV/HCV/STI screening and treatment to these populations. You will also provide administrative support for other clinical activities such as patient walk-in triage, health navigation, risk reduction counseling, supply inventory, and serve as a resource for program staff.

The Public Health Nurse will work in episodic clinics and will be responsible for providing patient triage, health navigation, and direct patient care. You will also assist with patient care under the direction of appropriate medical providers and/or under nursing scope of practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide patient triage and health navigation services
  • Provide direct patient care using nursing procedures as appropriate for a Registered Nurse
  • Assist with patient care under the direction of appropriate medical providers and/or under nursing scope of practice
  • Administer medications and vaccinations as per protocol
  • Check supplies for nursing patient encounters and notify manager or supply ordering designee if additional stock needed
  • Administer all medical tests and procedures as per protocol
  • Assist with preventative medicine efforts such as flu, STD, vital sign checks, and occupational health
  • Clearly communicate interventions to patients
  • Communicate changes to plan of care
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of medical issues
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of medical developments in preventing and treating HIV/AIDS and HCV infection, pain management, health issues related to homelessness and injection drug use, as well as and behavioral issues (i.e. medication compliance, safe sex, social and behavioral effects of drug use) as well as other medical conditions appropriate
  • Learn and maintain knowledge regarding harm reduction, and cultural competency regarding drug use
  • Seek out continuing education opportunities related to essential job functions
  • Complete continuing education requirements per the Massachusetts Board of Nursing regulations
  • Obtain ACRN or other certifications related to essential job functions within 2 years of hire
  • Understand and maintain universal precautions in all clinical activities
  • Provide age-specific care per Fenway Health policy
  • Provide health education
  • Provide community health education
  • Provide patient education related to their medical and psychosocial needs
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of vaccines, medications, and other therapeutic interventions as appropriate to our outpatient clinic
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of FH policies, procedures and services including those of TFI
  • Maintain knowledge of community resources
  • Assist in training other employees in the medical department including orientation of new staff, volunteers, and students
  • Effectively communicate with patients, co-workers on medical team, in medical department and across departments
  • Complete all data entry and documentation in a timely manner
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled general staff meetings as well as Nursing meetings (e.g. MDSM)
  • Be available to meet with team members during assigned work hours
  • Understand and abide by HIPAA regulations
  • Demonstrate a commitment to strong customer service
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Meet Agency Participatory Expectations
  • Suggest and participate in continuing quality improvement efforts
  • Adhere to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adhere to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adhere to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identify potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and take measures to rectify the situation
  • Attend all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Attend all regularly scheduled research meetings, trainings, forums and pertinent FCH staff meetings
  • Maintain professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintain and provide agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serve on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Conduct community and Street outreach
  • Provide coverage across other public health sites in Cambridge and Boston

Requirements:

  • ASN/BSN/MSN and current licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Familiarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, people living with HIV/AIDS (e.g., ANAC certification), and People Who Use Drugs (PWUD)
  • Commitment to community and public health
  • Current CPR Certification
  • BLS certification required
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with colleagues, patients, clients and vendors across the spectrum of diversity, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, national origin and immigrant status, religious or spiritual identity, disability (physical, mental, emotional and developmental), veteran status, and/or limited English proficiency

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2 or more years' experience in an ambulatory care setting
  • Experience in a harm reduction setting
  • Experience providing harm reduction services to people who use drugs
  • Experience providing sexual health services to the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Experience with electronic medical records/Epic strongly preferred
