Additionally, the Underwriting Manager plays a crucial role in enhancing relationships with agencies by recruiting skilled team members and effectively pairing underwriters with agency partners.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Territory Management:
    • Facilitate production and underwriting activities, including training and mentoring for all team members.
    • Oversee the maintenance of rates, rules, and forms by gathering and analyzing relevant information.
    • Collaborate with underwriters to drive growth through new business development and retention strategies, ensuring adherence to best practices for profitability.
    • Assist in formulating strategies for the territory to achieve the annual operating plan.
    • May engage in direct underwriting for specific agents or accounts based on regional needs.
  • Team Management:
    • Review and approve file referrals for underwriting staff.
    • Monitor underwriting quality and team performance, providing reports to Regional Managers as necessary.
    • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, salary assessments, and oversee the annual operating plan.
    • Develop coaching and development plans based on team performance.
    • Document and address performance-related issues as they arise.
    • Collaborate with Corporate Underwriting to participate in training as a Subject Matter Expert.
    • Conduct interviews and select new team members.
    • Lead weekly sales meetings for the team.
    • Perform quality assurance reviews of files and provide coaching based on the results.
    • Facilitate leadership and development within a hybrid or remote work environment.
  • Agency Management and Marketing:
    • Engage in agency visits, both virtually and in person.
    • Support customer and agency relations, including the implementation of strategic plans.
    • Develop and execute individual business plans for key agents.
    • Assist in identifying new production sources.
Qualifications:
Education:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a four-year college degree is preferred.
  • AU designation is required, with a goal of achieving CIC or CPCU designation.
  • Leadership or management certification is preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the insurance industry is required, preferably in an underwriting capacity.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong leadership, motivational, and coaching skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting and insurance principles.
  • Effective communication skills combined with strong analytical, creative, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capability to develop and implement plans with minimal supervision.
  • Technical expertise in insurance with a solid understanding of risk appetite.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with agency partners.
  • Proficiency in hiring and retaining productive team members.

Working Conditions:
  • General office environment.
  • Travel within the assigned territory may be required, including some overnight stays.
