The Starting Place provides preschool daycare services for families with children aged 2.9 to 5 years. Our daycare offerings are funded by the families. The Starting Place stands out as the sole comprehensive special education preschool in Columbia County. Our classrooms are led by a master-level, New York State certified special education teacher alongside certified teacher assistants. The TSP team also includes a speech language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, and a clinical social worker.

This is a Non-Exempt position:

Pay Rate: $15.50 per hour

Hours: As needed Monday-Friday between 9am-5pm

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Support the classroom educator in organizing, preparing, and executing educational activities; serve as a positive role model for the children.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist children in completing daily educational tasks, including daily living activities (e.g., toileting, eating, dressing, etc.); provide supervision and assistance during recreational activities and during arrival and departure times.
  • Maintain positive, supportive relationships with all children; provide support in accordance with individual behavior plans as needed; consult with the teacher or management staff regarding any challenges encountered with children during daily routines.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of the children by maintaining appropriate supervision and reporting any potentially unsafe or unhealthy conditions to the Supervisor or management staff.
  • Assist the teacher and other classroom personnel in daily activities as per each child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP); help with the inventory and preparation of classroom materials according to the teacher's lesson plans and curriculum; responsible for the organization, cleanup, and storage of classroom materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Remain adaptable regarding classroom assignments to ensure daily supervision needs are met; assist in any classroom as requested by the Supervisor or management staff; assist with procurement of groceries or supplies as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with the teacher, clinicians, and other classroom staff to meet the needs of the children.
  • Participate in all required staff meetings, team meetings, training sessions, and programs as mandated by regulatory and Agency requirements or as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED (now referred to as TASC)
  • One year of experience working with preschool special education children.
  • Ability to achieve certification in all required trainings, which are conducted during weekday hours.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
  • Willingness to assist in other classrooms as needed.
