The Investigative Officer position at Emerson College is primarily focused on executing follow-up inquiries as directed by the leadership team. This role encompasses the analysis of daily reports to pinpoint cases that necessitate further scrutiny and devising the investigative approach while synchronizing the efforts of involved personnel. The officer also assists community members in securing protective measures related to domestic and dating violence, among other matters, and collaborates closely with various law enforcement entities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to significant community assistance requests as instructed.
  • Identify and/or apprehend suspects, executing arrests when required.
  • Supervise the activities of other department personnel engaged in prolonged criminal investigations.
  • Serve as a liaison to other law enforcement agencies concerning the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of incidents related to campus occurrences.
  • Complete both mandatory and specialized training assignments.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders and engage with community groups and individuals.
  • Utilize various computer software programs for data entry and retrieval.
  • Advise the Chief in establishing protocols by recommending changes or enhancements in departmental operations.
  • Represent the department at necessary meetings.
  • Act as the department's Crime Prevention Officer, evaluating crime patterns and disseminating related bulletins.
  • Provide fingerprinting services as required.
  • Assume patrol duties as directed by the Chief of Police.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations, gather evidence, and obtain statements in accordance with legal standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive records regarding the collection, storage, and disposal of evidence, property, and contraband.
  • Function as the department's prosecutor and court representative.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience, preferably in an educational environment.
  • Completion of a full-time police recruit training academy accredited by the relevant state authorities.
  • Ability to secure a valid motor vehicle operator's license and be insurable under the College's automobile liability policy.
  • Successful completion of an annual fitness-for-duty assessment, including a background check, psychological evaluation, and medical clearance.

  • Comprehensive understanding of criminal law, constitutional law, and the state court system.
  • Exhibit ethical behavior, integrity, and accountability.
  • Ability to exercise judgment in decision-making and problem-solving.

  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting and applying laws, regulations, and policies.

  • Experience in collecting evidence from surveillance systems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain on foot for extended periods, perform physical tasks such as stooping, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs.
  • Must be able to access all facilities on foot to respond to emergency calls, including upper floors of buildings when elevators are unavailable.
  • Capability to conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings.
  • Physical ability to operate departmental equipment.
  • Work may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including severe weather and loud noises.
  • Must maintain physical fitness to ensure personal safety and the safety of community members.
  • Compliance with uniform requirements is necessary.

Work Environment:

  • Flexibility to work different shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
