Job Title: Public Works Director

Join the City of Sandpoint, ID team as a Public Works Director and take on a challenging role that requires strong leadership and technical skills. As a key member of the city's management team, you will be responsible for overseeing the Public Works Department, which includes water and wastewater systems, street construction and maintenance, building services, street lighting, storm water management, equipment fleet management, and department budgeting and capital improvement planning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide administrative and management duties over the Public Works Department
  • Perform professional engineering duties, including project and plan review and approval, project design and management, and providing technical support
  • Work with federal and state agencies regarding requirements concerning water and wastewater discharge, water quality, and industrial pretreatment
  • Plan, implement, and supervise a variety of capital improvement and maintenance projects
  • Prepare and monitor complex departmental budget
  • Develop and evaluate departmental plans, goals, and objectives
  • Assist in the technical review of plans and specifications as required by Sandpoint Code and city policies
  • Prepare plans, specifications, and budget estimates for in-house projects
  • Provide engineering assistance to other city departments
  • Administer and coordinate engineering and related interdepartmental activities
  • Work with other public agencies regarding public works projects
  • Develop storm water management plans and policies
  • Oversee transportation planning
  • Answer inquiries from the public
  • Prepare correspondence and written communications
  • Actively participate in the hiring of department staff
  • Direct activities of department's staff
  • Attend committee and city council meetings as required
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in engineering, public administration, business management, or a closely related field
  • Five (5) years' experience in engineering and public works administration, including supervisory experience
  • Licensed as a professional engineer in the state of Idaho
  • Valid, current Idaho driver's license

  • Master's degree in a closely related field
