Position Overview:
At Houston Methodist, the Advanced Cardiac Sonographer II role is designated for an experienced and proficient sonographer who conducts a range of standard to intricate echocardiograms. This includes, but is not limited to, Transthoracic Echocardiograms (TTE) utilizing Color, Spectral Doppler, and 2-D imaging, as well as Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE), Plain Stress Echocardiograms, and advanced TTE techniques such as 3D imaging for both inpatient and outpatient evaluations.
This role also encompasses support for pharmacologic and exercise stress tests, Holter monitoring, EKG, and cardiac event tracking, alongside advanced procedures when necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
The Advanced Cardiac Sonographer II is responsible for locating, assessing, and documenting essential anatomical, pathological, and functional information using various ultrasound technologies.
This position involves transmitting examinations to compatible DICOM storage systems, processing preliminary technical data in designated interpreting systems, and promptly communicating significant findings to the attending physician.
The Advanced Cardiac Sonographer II actively engages in unit-based or system-wide quality and compliance initiatives and is required to be available for on-call duties.
Team Collaboration:
Fosters a positive work atmosphere and contributes to a cohesive, team-oriented environment that encourages mutual support to achieve optimal departmental outcomes.
Works collaboratively with all members of the patient care team by effectively communicating and reporting relevant patient care information in a thorough manner.
Assists in training new staff and mentoring clinical students to enhance their confidence in skills and knowledge.
Service Excellence:
Conducts cardiac echo studies, ensuring that accurate and precise data is relayed for physician interpretation. Provides additional assistance for pharmacologic and exercise stress tests, Holter monitoring, EKG, and advanced procedures as needed.
Addresses the physical needs of patients during cardiac echo studies and educates them about the purpose and techniques involved in their examinations.
Proactively identifies issues and develops solutions for optimal patient outcomes.
Provides direct support to physicians and healthcare team members during cardiac echo studies, including patient preparation and maintaining sterile techniques as required.
Quality and Safety Standards:
Accurately identifies and assesses cardiac structures, including calculating valve areas, pressure gradients, and ejection fractions during echo studies.
Ensures the quality of studies is clear and concise to optimize imaging for the patient care team and interpreting physician.
Recognizes abnormal findings during exams or data processing and takes immediate corrective action or communicates with appropriate personnel for the best results.
Maintains proper sterile techniques and adheres to infection control protocols, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Ensures all patient care equipment is functioning correctly and has undergone quality control checks prior to use, reporting any malfunctions to management.
Documentation and Compliance:
Provides accurate and comprehensive documentation of patient procedures and enters charges at the time of service delivery when applicable.
Utilizes resources efficiently and manages time effectively to prioritize daily tasks.
Professional Development:
Participates in departmental projects and shared governance activities, seeking opportunities for continued learning and development as a Sonographer.
Encourages a constructive teaching environment by engaging students and colleagues in valuable learning opportunities aligned with business objectives.

Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited educational program recognized by the credentialing body for the required certifications.
Experience:
A minimum of three years of experience as a Cardiac/Echo Sonographer is required; candidates with two years of experience at Houston Methodist may be considered.
Licenses and Certifications:
Required certifications include BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) and one of the following: RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS), RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), RCCS - Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), or RDCS-PE - Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer - Pediatric Echocardiography (ARDMS).
Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to safely perform assigned duties, verified through ongoing assessments.
Possesses basic computer skills and operates multiple systems to maintain patient and exam documentation.
Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and collaborates effectively with all levels of the healthcare team, ensuring excellent customer service.
Adapts to changing priorities with minimal supervision, organizing workflow and participating in problem-solving.
Proficient in English, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and colleagues in a customer-focused manner.
Supplemental Requirements:
Uniform: Scrubs required. On-call duties may be necessary during emergencies.
