Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse Educator will be responsible for developing and implementing educational programs for nursing staff. This includes creating and delivering training sessions, assessing learner characteristics, and evaluating the outcomes of staff education. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nursing education and experience in psychiatric and/or acute care. They will also possess excellent verbal communication skills and be able to maintain effective contacts with a variety of hospital personnel.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Educator will be responsible for the following:

  • Developing and implementing educational programs for nursing staff
  • Creating and delivering training sessions
  • Assessing learner characteristics
  • Evaluating the outcomes of staff education
  • Collaborating with the Chief Clinical Officer, Vice President of Clinical Services, and other professionals to refine nursing education program content
  • Teaching healthcare topics to unlicensed nursing staff and practicing nurses
  • Overseeing and assisting in the development of the Preceptor Program
  • Planning, implementing, and overseeing orientation programs
  • Providing CPR and CPI training to all staff
  • Developing, revising, and utilizing competency tools for ensuring nursing staff practice meets accepted professional standards
  • Providing ongoing staff development, continuing education, skills, annual competency assessments, and leading local Skills Fair
  • Completing assessment of clinical staff using clinical competencies and other forms of knowledge testing
  • Collecting data and information to validate an identified gap in professional practice and to determine the specific knowledge, skill, or practice deficit or opportunity needed
  • Completing concurrent and closed chart audits daily and as deemed necessary to determine quality of documentation, knowledge retention, and effectiveness of training
  • Communicating results of chart audits per protocol to determine staff needs
  • Providing one-on-one feedback as needed to support staff in their role
  • Promoting the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and use of evidence to guide clinical practice, improving patient care, and fostering lifelong learning
  • Role modeling practices for creating and sustaining positive learning and practice environments
  • Assessing learner characteristics, including learning styles and learning needs, for program development
  • Creating an effective learning environment, demonstrating proficiency in the use of technology, and evaluating the outcomes of staff education
  • Implementing a variety of teaching strategies tailored to the learner's characteristics, learning needs, cultural perspectives, and outcome objectives
  • Advising in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of materials, learning environments, and teaching strategies appropriate to the situation and learner's developmental level, learning needs, readiness, ability to learn, and culture
  • Supporting the transition of nurses and other healthcare team members across learning and practice environments, roles, and professional stages
  • Participating in health promotion and community development activities, including public relations exercises for the hospitals
  • Supporting quality improvement initiatives and processes
  • Staying up-to-date with clinical trends and nursing standards
  • Accountable for effective performance and follow-through of all assigned responsibilities and for completing responsibilities within designated (or agreed-upon) timeframes
  • Completing responsibilities in a manner consistent with organizational policies, goals, and values
  • Displaying concern and initiative, being resourceful and calm in emergencies, being prompt and efficient with minimal absences, cooperating and maintaining good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors
  • Seeking guidance and remaining knowledgeable of, and complying with, all applicable federal and state laws, as well as hospital policies that apply to assigned duties
  • Complying with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct
  • Complying with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy
  • Performing other duties as assigned
  • Understanding and adhering to NPH's compliance standards as they appear in NPH's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy
  • Keeping abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required
  • Five years of nursing experience required, with experience in nursing education and psychiatric and/or acute care
  • RN in the state of hospital required
  • BLS and CPI certification obtained during orientation
  • Excellent verbal communication skills necessary to instruct and comfort patients and their families
  • Maintaining effective contacts with a variety of hospital personnel
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on assigned unit/department
