Pharmacy Technician III

A Pharmacy Technician III at TriHealth plays a vital role in the pharmacy operations, working under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. The primary responsibility is to assist the pharmacist in the distribution of medications to patients in the hospital, including inpatient and outpatient units, emergency room, and operating room. This involves selecting, counting, compounding, packing, labeling, and delivering medications. Additionally, the Pharmacy Technician III is responsible for the preparation of sterile compounds, including chemotherapy and hazardous substances, and maintaining the sterile environment in the IV Room. Proficiency in accessing and viewing the electronic health record and pharmacy automated systems is essential. The role requires working in multiple areas of the pharmacy to maintain competency and broaden skills for all areas of the job scope.
Job Requirements:
A High School Degree or GED is required. Active National Pharm Tech Cert (CPhT) is mandatory. The approved cert is through Pharm Tech Cert Board (PCTB) and ExCPT Cert by the National Healthcareer Association. Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician is also necessary. The ability to compound sterile products and maintain a sterile environment is crucial. Up to 1 year of technical pharmacy experience is required, with the previous role being a Pharmacy Technician II to be eligible to move into the Pharmacy Technician III position.
Job Responsibilities:
The Pharmacy Technician III assists the pharmacist in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of compounded sterile products, including chemotherapy and hazardous medications, while following current guidelines and policy (USP 797, USP 800, ASHP, NIOSH, and Board of Pharmacy laws and regulations) and department procedures. This involves performing hand hygiene and garbing, cleaning and disinfecting the hoods and room according to policy, and keeping accurate cleaning logs. Prioritizing IV medication production appropriately and disposing of IV and chemotherapy/hazardous waste is also essential. Adhering to all safety requirements when handling, preparing, labeling, and disposing of chemotherapy and hazardous medications is critical. Additionally, the Pharmacy Technician III assists in non-sterile medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, packaging, scanning, labeling, filling, and delivering medications per department guidelines. Selecting the appropriate medications and accurately labeling is crucial. Weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients by using proper calculations, equipment, and technique is also necessary. Working with the Automated Dispensing Machine, loading/refilling/unloading, outdating, and resolving discrepancies is essential. Stock Orders/Emergency Carts/Boxes must be accurately filled in a timely manner. Accurately and efficiently transporting medications from the pharmacy to areas outside of the pharmacy (tubing, cart delivery, IV Run, STAT, etc.) is also required. Maintaining an accurate controlled substances (CII-CV) inventory and reviewing and maintaining controlled substance records is crucial. Immediately reporting unresolved controlled discrepancies to a supervisor is essential. Optimizing workflow by efficiently and accurately completing job duties and prioritizing workload is vital. Having a good overall job knowledge and using good technical and procedural judgment is necessary. Assisting with other duties as necessary for efficient pharmacy operations is also required. Showing initiative and flexibility in carrying out day-to-day tasks is essential. Utilizing appropriate and logical problem-solving techniques is necessary. Identifying critical issues and communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner is also required. Appropriately using pharmacy technology and following department standards of work, policies, and workflows is essential. Maintaining the pharmacy automation (changing consumables, cleaning, etc.) and identifying, troubleshooting, and reporting pharmacy automation issues is necessary. Accessing patient information, processing in-basket Rx Messages, and printing labels in the Electronic Health Record is also required. Responding politely and professionally to pharmacist/nursing/physician/patient or other requests via telephone, in writing, or in person is essential. Appropriately managing, triaging, and ensuring timely follow-up of all requests is necessary. Assisting in the training of new employees is also required.
