Senior Protection and Control Engineer

Hatch is seeking a highly motivated Senior Protection and Control Engineer to join our Energy team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and reviewing efficient and reliable electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and review electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations
  • Perform design studies and demonstrate a good working knowledge of relay protections involving logic diagrams, calculations, and coordination studies
  • Experience in Aspen or CAPE (or equivalent) software program for running protection system coordination studies and interpreting results
  • Knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies commonly applied at Transmission and Distribution substations
  • Work with relays from major suppliers such as SEL, Hitachi, Siemens, and GE
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical single lines, three lines, schematics, and functional diagrams
  • Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for projects
  • Perform quality control and peer checking on settings calculation, documentation, and fault analysis studies
  • Coordinates design activities to maintain project schedules, budget, and quality requirements
  • Delivers accurate and thorough electrical designs that meet industry standard specifications and prudent engineering practices
  • Reviews internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice, and constructability
  • Familiar with NERC PRC and CIP standards
  • Maintains complete project documentation with respect to relay settings, engineering studies, and calculations
  • Maintains good working relationship with internal groups that support projects
  • Mentors and provides guidance to developing or junior engineers within the department
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of professional experience focused on the development of protection philosophies and relay settings development
  • Experience in relay setting calculations and coordination of Intelligent Electronic Devices and Numerical Relays
  • Ability to use CAPE or equivalent software program (Aspen)
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE
  • A high level of interpersonal communication skills, including a strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to perform independently and in a team environment and provide project ownership
  • Travel to client sites as required
Preferred:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration
  • Prior utility consulting experience
  • Experience with IEC 61850
