Job Title:
Power Plant Operator/Utility Assistant

Shift:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Job Summary:
Responsible for the operation and upkeep of the generation systems while providing assistance to the Electric and Water departments as necessary.

FLSA Classification:
Hourly

Reports to:
Superintendent

Travel:
Yes

No direct supervisory responsibilities, but may involve managing project-related activities of team members.

Essential Functions:
  • Operates, monitors, and maintains generation equipment efficiently.
  • Assists with maintenance of facilities and grounds.
  • Provides support to Electric and Water departments as required.
  • Identifies and rectifies abnormal conditions promptly.
  • Coordinates and manages switching procedures for both routine and emergency situations.
  • Maintains vigilant oversight of system parameters, taking immediate corrective actions or notifying appropriate personnel when necessary.
  • Regularly records readings from gauges and meters in the control room.
  • Conducts readings of electric and water meters, manages daily service orders, and performs daily water plant tests.
  • Participates in a four-week on-call rotation.
  • Undertakes all other duties as assigned to support utility operations.

Marginal Functions:
Assists in IAMU Mutual Aid.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Previous experience as a Power Plant Operator, completion of an approved correspondence course or formal technical training, graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Understanding of electricity principles and power plant operations; proficiency in operating all generators and substations.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, sound judgment, and ability to respond effectively during emergencies.
  • Willingness and capability to adapt to continuously evolving knowledge requirements.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
  • Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, all applicable city, state, and federal standards for the position.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
  • Safety-toed footwear.
  • All other necessary PPE to perform essential job functions.

Licenses, Certifications, and Residency Requirements:
  • Iowa Driver's License.
  • Commercial Driver's License.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Pre-employment drug screening.

Physical Demands:
  • Standing - Required to stand throughout the shift on various terrains.
  • Walking - Required to walk during the shift.
  • Sitting - Required to sit at a desk for up to 30 minutes at a time.
  • Lifting - Capable of lifting up to 180-pound chemical containers (2-person task).
  • Carrying - Able to carry a 40-pound ladder and equipment up to 100 feet.
  • Pushing - Able to push up to 110 pounds at heights from floor to shoulder level.
  • Pulling - Capable of pulling up to 160 pounds at floor level.
  • Climbing - Able to climb up to 17 standard steps to access various parts of the facility.
  • Reaching - Able to reach up to 24 inches in various positions.
  • Gripping - Capable of gripping up to 75 pounds to use hand tools.
  • Pinching - Able to pinch up to 10 pounds with preferred hand.
  • Low-level Activity - Engages in low-level activity for up to 5 minutes for maintenance tasks.
  • Hand Coordination - Required to coordinate hands in various positions to operate controls and tools.

  • Uneven/slippery surfaces - Required to perform essential functions on slippery surfaces and uneven terrain.
  • Weather - Required to perform essential functions outdoors under various weather conditions.
