Job Summary

On Call Counsel is seeking a highly skilled Staff Attorney to join our team in Bronx County. As a Staff Attorney, you will be responsible for providing culturally sensitive services to low-income clients facing eviction by representing them in the Bronx County court.

Key Responsibilities
  • Counseling and Assistance: Provide clients with counseling and assisting to ensure maintenance of housing.
  • Full Representation: Handle a full caseload of full representation non-payment and holdover proceedings in court.
  • Litigation: Handle litigation before administrative agencies as necessary, including termination hearings, etc.
  • Outreach: Conduct outreach, including facilitating educational workshops and trainings.
  • Trial Representation: Represent tenants at trial.
  • Document Preparation: Prepare legal agreements, documents, motions, orders to show cause, etc.
  • Court Case Evaluation: Judge the merits and spot the issues of court cases that we are assigned by the court, the Department of Social Services, or self-referred.
  • Commitment to Public Interest Law: Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice.
Requirements
  • J.D. from an ABA Accredited Law School: J.D from an ABA Accredited Law School.
  • Level 1: Entry Level: Level 1: Entry Level.
  • Level 2: Minimum of 1 year of experience required: Level 2: Minimum of 1 year of experience required.
  • Level 3: 3-4 years of experience including 1-2 years of landlord-tenant experience: Level 3: 3-4 years of experience including 1-2 years of landlord-tenant experience.
  • Litigation Experience: Litigation experience; landlord-tenant experience.
  • Trial Experience: Trial experience is a plus.
  • New York City Housing Law and Public Benefits: Familiarity with New York City housing law and public benefits.
  • Stress Management: Ability to handle stress and work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Client Representation: Experience providing client representation and handling a case from intake to closing.
  • Team Building: Strong team building skills and ability to work individually.
  • Professional Ethics: Professional ethics and integrity.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication, research, organizational and writing skills.
  • Legal Issue Anticipation: Ability to anticipate legal issues.
  • Low-Income Experience: Experience working with low-income individuals.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
  • Time Management: Strong time management skills.
  • Maturity and Integrity: Maturity, integrity, and sound judgment.
