Position Summary
The Senior Optical Engineer will join a dedicated engineering team focused on developing innovative laser components and systems, transitioning them into market-ready products.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct optical design and tolerance analysis utilizing Zemax and Matlab.
- Design, construct, and align optical bench setups for both prototype and production verification testing, while developing alignment procedures.
- Take ownership of significant portions of complex development projects.
- Act as the optical and laser lead for laser systems and subsystems, guiding them from initial concepts to product prototypes and initial production phases, with a focus on optical and opto-mechanical elements.
- Evaluate failure modes, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions emphasizing optical and opto-mechanical aspects.
- Collaborate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, engaging with customers and suppliers, while contributing to reports, peer-reviewed publications, and invention disclosures.
- Communicate effectively (both written and verbal) with manufacturing, supply chain, program management, and customers as necessary.
- Uphold and advocate for the mission, values, and culture of the organization.
- Participate in relevant engineering, customer, or business meetings.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Expert knowledge of Zemax OpticStudio, with experience in both sequential and non-sequential simulations, as well as scripting and interfacing with Matlab for design automation.
- Proficiency in aligning and integrating complex optical table setups.
- A solid understanding of mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical designs and components, and their interactions within a system to achieve performance objectives.
Programming Skills
- Proficiency in Matlab, Labview, Python, or C++. Experience with Solidworks is also required.
- Hands-on experience in the development, prototyping, testing, or transition to production of complex electro-optical/mechanical systems.
- An appreciation for engineering process rigor, appropriately applied based on product and process maturity.
Additional Knowledge
- Familiarity with semiconductor laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling, optical components and materials from UV to IR, as well as optical metrology and measurement equipment.
- Experience with multimode, single mode, and polarization-maintaining fiber, as well as laser packaging experience.
- Knowledge of electronic test equipment for time-domain and frequency-domain measurements, control theory, and signal processing.
Education
- A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Master's preferred) or a related technical field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the optical or laser-related industry.
Citizenship Requirement
- U.S. Citizenship is required, and the position necessitates an active DOD Secret-level security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance shortly after starting employment.
Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is $113,385/year - $176,030/year. Compensation may be adjusted based on the level, location, or scope of the position during the hiring process.
