Fleet Maintenance Technician Job Description

The City of Burbank, CA is seeking a highly skilled Fleet Maintenance Technician to join our team. As a key member of our Public Works Department, you will be responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on a variety of light and heavy equipment, including refuse, transportation, construction, and specialized utility equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Equipment Inspection and Repair: Inspect, diagnose, adjust, and repair mechanical, electrical, and electronic defects and emission systems on all types of light and heavy equipment.
  • Maintenance and Overhauling: Perform general overhauling, maintenance, and preventative maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance and extend its lifespan.
  • System Maintenance: Maintain and repair hydraulic and electric systems within equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of time worked and service repair orders, providing valuable insights for future maintenance and repair needs.
  • Parts Procurement and Emergency Repairs: Order parts and make emergency repairs and service calls out of the shop, minimizing downtime and ensuring continuous operation.
  • Supervision and Evaluation: Supervise and provide input on evaluation for the Fleet Maintenance Apprentice, helping to develop their skills and knowledge.
Requirements:
  • Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent and any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of the methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment, as well as the ability to use garage equipment and tools, make various types of mechanical repairs, and inspect and diagnose mechanical troubles.
  • Driver's License and Certifications: A valid California Class C driver's license or equivalent at time of appointment and a valid California Class A or B driver's license or equivalent with the following endorsements: hazardous materials, air brakes, and bulk tank within 12 months of appointment. A minimum of four National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, pertinent to the job assignment, will be required at time of appointment or within six months of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Alternative Fuel Experience: Experience with alternative fueled, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
  • Diagnostic Equipment Proficiency: Proficiency in using electronic diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders.
