The City of Newport is situated on the picturesque Yaquina Bay and serves as the Lincoln County seat. With two major highways converging in the city, it offers easy access to visitors and residents alike. As a well-loved year-round tourist destination, Newport provides a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities, historic sites, performing arts, family activities, shopping, and culinary establishments. Commercial fishing, shipping, and marine research contribute to an active coastal economy.

We are seeking a highly skilled leader who can effectively manage and develop a team of professionals. The ideal candidate should possess strong leadership abilities, excellent communication skills, and experience with workforce development to foster employee recruitment, growth, accountability, and retention. A commitment to collaborative interdepartmental coordination and maintaining, enhancing, and strengthening inter-agency relations is desired.

A strong department budget developer and manager, professional, and modern police trainer, the successful candidate will be committed to continuing and enhancing a community-focused policing model. They should have a genuine appreciation for Newport's unique culture and be an active and visible member of the community.

The selected candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Social Science, or a related field, as well as at least seven years of progressive, responsible police department experience with increasing levels of responsibility in management and supervisory positions, including at least five years of command experience. Alternatively, a satisfactory combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the described duties of the position will be considered.

The chosen individual must also meet all Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) standards, possess and maintain a valid Oregon license to operate a motor vehicle with an acceptable driving record, and be able to pass a thorough background check, medical evaluation, and psychological evaluation. Participation in advanced law enforcement management programs or equivalent executive leadership training is preferred.
