Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Educational Support Specialist is tasked with fostering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere within the Head Start Program, ensuring that classroom activities run smoothly in the absence of the primary educator.

Key Responsibilities:

Classroom Management and Educational Support

  • Fulfill the responsibilities of the primary educator during their absence.
  • Assist in the execution of the classroom curriculum and document modifications for the lead teachers to input into Teaching Strategies Gold.
  • Observe and cater to the individual needs of children.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and developmentally suitable environment (including gym, outdoor spaces, and classrooms).
  • Encourage healthy eating habits and engage in meaningful conversations during family-style dining.
  • Promote the development of self-help skills in children (such as dressing, toileting, handwashing, and dental hygiene).
  • Support classroom educators in guiding children towards self-regulation through consistent and positive reinforcement techniques.

Family Involvement

  • Facilitate parent involvement and readiness initiatives to strengthen home-school relationships as directed by the Education Supervisor/Case Management Supervisor.
  • Assist the Family Advocate with outreach and recruitment efforts.

Program Compliance

  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold a high standard of professionalism at all times.
  • Provide classroom coverage during staff absences, planning sessions, or emergencies.
  • Support intake processes as needed, as determined by the Education Supervisor/Case Management Supervisor.
  • Adhere to the mission, goals, and values of the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council and Head Start programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to the MA Department of Early Education and Care, QRIS, NAEYC, and Head Start.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with all stakeholders.
  • Assist with various cross-component activities as assigned by supervisors.
  • If bilingual, may be requested to serve as an interpreter and translator.
  • Engage in professional development, reflective supervision, and attend regular staff meetings.
  • Support initiatives aimed at school readiness and family engagement.
  • Perform additional duties as required based on program needs.

Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, along with one to five years of teaching experience.

  • High School Diploma or GED is mandatory.
  • Must be working towards obtaining a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or a preferred degree within the first year of employment.
  • Must possess or be in the process of obtaining an EEC Teacher Preschool certificate from the Department of Early Education and Care.
  • A passion for working with low-income, culturally diverse, and at-risk families is essential; prior experience is advantageous.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of an active educational environment, including bending, sitting, walking, and standing for extended periods.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Foster positive relationships with parents, children, and colleagues.
  • Punctuality and reliability are crucial for this role.
  • Access to reliable transportation and a valid Driver's License are required.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is necessary to accommodate the needs of children and families, including potential evening and weekend commitments.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English is required.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is preferred or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must provide documentation of a current physical examination, negative TB test, and proof of MMR immunity (Hepatitis B immunity is recommended).
  • A suitable CORI, SORI, and DCF background check must be completed prior to employment.
  • A fingerprint check must be finalized within the first thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and identities, including underserved communities, is essential to support the agency's mission of fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional Information:

Supervisory Role: None

Travel Requirements: Travel may be necessary for meetings, training, and off-site events.

Physical Requirements: This position is highly active, requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing. The employee must be able to lift and/or move items exceeding 50 pounds regularly.

Work Environment: This role is situated in a professional office setting, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
