Job Title: Supervising Civil Engineer

Join the City of San Luis Obispo, CA team as a Supervising Civil Engineer and play a key role in shaping the city's infrastructure and development projects.

Job Summary:

As a Supervising Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the review of private development and City projects, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and City laws, ordinances, and guidelines. You will also supervise a team of engineers and technicians, providing guidance and direction to ensure the successful completion of projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate plans and specifications for private development and City projects
  • Direct and review the work of engineers and technicians
  • Coordinate with other city departments, outside agencies, contractors, and consultants
  • Develop and implement systems and procedures for contract administration
  • Provide engineering services and consultation to field and office personnel
  • Prepare and initiate project-related studies and reports
  • Apply for and manage grant funding
  • Prepare contract specifications and plans for public works projects
  • Inspect and evaluate ongoing public works projects
  • Conduct surveys to obtain field data
  • Prepare and direct the preparation of written correspondence, reports, and other materials
  • Maintain working and departmental automated and manual files
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and technology
  • Represent the City on engineering issues to community and stakeholder groups
Requirements:
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil or structural engineering
  • Five years of professional experience in development review and/or the design and construction and management of civil engineering projects, including at least one year of supervisory experience
  • California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer
  • Valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record
