Job Title: Engineer I-III

Join the City of San Luis Obispo, CA team as a skilled Engineer I-III, responsible for providing general engineering support and direction to various public and private projects.

Job Summary:

As an Engineer I-III, you will perform professional and technical civil engineering work, starting with simple projects and moving to more complex ones. Your tasks will include preparing construction drawings and specifications, reviewing and evaluating plans and specifications, inspecting and evaluating ongoing projects, and conducting surveys and field construction tests.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare construction drawings and specifications for public works projects using AutoCAD and related civil design software.
  • Review and evaluate preliminary and final plans and specifications for private development.
  • Inspect and evaluate ongoing public works and development projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Conduct surveys and field construction tests for compliance purposes.
  • Verify and maintain records and files, prepare technical reports, and present reports as needed.
  • Attend meetings and make presentations as a representative of the City.
  • Perform computer and tracking support functions.
  • Interact with the public at the public counter, answering questions and issuing permits for construction in the City's right of way.
  • Perform studies, research files, records, plans, and maps.
  • Gather, assemble, analyze, and interpret field data, and prepare reports.
  • Plan, direct, participate, supervise the work product of technicians and interns, and effectively complete assigned projects.
  • Administer consultant contracts for support services such as surveying, soil testing, biological studies, etc.
  • Coordinate with other departments as needed to complete assignments.
  • Provide planning, specification, calculation, and cost estimating review of other's work.
  • Review construction of projects and assist in maintaining construction documents.
  • Review and evaluate development plans, maps, and related documents for conformance to City, State, and Federal codes.
  • Review calculations and issue permits.
  • Gather traffic data, maintain traffic records, conduct traffic studies, and prepare traffic reports.
  • Provide assistance to other City employees regarding engineering-related matters.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field or possession of an Engineer in Training certificate.
  • Two years' work experience in design, construction, surveying, permits, or plan review of civil engineering projects.
  • A valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • A valid certificate of registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) is highly desirable.
