Position Overview

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a qualified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Urology department. This role primarily focuses on outpatient care (95%), with occasional inpatient responsibilities. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will assist with clinic operations and pre/post-operative appointments.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; daytime hours
  • No holiday, night, weekend, or on-call duties
Key Responsibilities:
  • Exhibit clinical proficiency and extensive knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of various health conditions.
  • Accountable for health outcomes within a designated patient population.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals in areas of clinical expertise.
  • Develop educational resources for patients, families, and staff in specialized areas.
  • Mentor graduate students in advanced practice and patient care methodologies.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and/or research relevant to the specialty area.
Essential Duties:
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients' health by obtaining health histories and performing physical examinations.
  • Deliver direct clinical care to patients.
  • Prescribe medications and therapies; order and interpret laboratory tests, x-rays, and procedures as per clinical privileges.
  • Evaluate patients to determine their need for additional healthcare services.
  • Provide comprehensive education to patients and their families.
  • Document all care and education provided in the medical record.
  • Refer patients to other disciplines as necessary.
  • Act as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise.
  • Integrate research-based knowledge with clinical expertise in decision-making.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor in appearance and conduct.
  • Advocate for patients, families, colleagues, and the community.
  • Keep certifications and continuing education up to date as required for licensure.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and exemplify the 'Patients First' philosophy.
  • Participate in departmental or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement educational strategies for patients and their families.
  • Contribute to programs addressing the continuing education needs of staff.
  • Act as a role model and preceptor for students.
  • Provide formal education to both internal and external groups related to the specialty area.
  • Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient populations as applicable.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Master's degree from an accredited nursing school or a master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Acute care certification required for APRNs (inpatient experience as an NP may substitute for acute care certification).
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Illinois. Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license in Illinois. Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. Eligible to apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number upon licensure.
  • Privileged and credentialed through the Northwestern Medicine Medical Staff Office (MSO).
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation - BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
