Job Overview

The role involves providing compassionate support in all aspects of funeral planning, cremation services, and burial arrangements to assist families during their time of grief. The professional will execute the decisions made by families or their legal representatives concerning the funeral, final disposition of the remains, and memorial services. This position requires interaction with families to meet their death care needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responds to on-call duties, including: receiving initial calls, engaging with families, addressing inquiries, providing essential information, and facilitating transfers.
  • Oversees and cares for the deceased with dignity while performing various tasks such as: confirming identity; obtaining consent for embalming; conducting embalming; dressing, styling hair, and/or applying cosmetics; preparing cremated remains.
  • Organizes and leads funeral and memorial services in a professional, structured, and empathetic manner in accordance with company standards.
  • Negotiates and finalizes funeral agreements.
  • Manages contracts, legal documentation, and payment collection in line with company protocols.
  • Ensures families are aware of special honors/services available for veterans and guarantees the provision of selected honors/services.
  • Coordinates the burial or cremation of human remains.
  • Confirms authorization to proceed with service arrangements.
  • Supervises/assists in funeral services by: managing vehicle parking; ushering; operating funeral transport; assisting at chapel and church services; supporting at the cemetery; delivering flowers, caskets, urns, photographs, and other personal mementos; setting up and dismantling chairs; and participating in special events.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant professional, municipal, provincial/state, and federal licensing authorities, regulations, and standards.
  • Provides aftercare in the absence of a Family Service Counselor.
  • Facilitates potential pre-need referrals to Family Service Counselors.
  • Prepares and accurately completes documentation and online entries related to services, cremations, and maintenance.
  • Enhances community engagement and market presence through active participation with local organizations, religious groups, and other entities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of a dual degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical institution specializing in funeral and mortuary science as mandated by state/province law and as specified by each state board.

Experience

  • Embalmer, Apprentice, Mortuary Practitioner, or Funeral Director, Apprentice as required by state/provincial law.
  • A minimum of 2 years of directly related experience is preferred.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Must fulfill all licensing requirements in the applicable state/province as required by law and as dictated by each state board.
  • Possession of a current state/province issued driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of customs related to religious and fraternal organizations.
  • Proficiency in computer use and familiarity with software including MS Office products is required.
  • High level of empathy and integrity.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
