About the Position
Under supervision, the incumbent engages in foundational civil engineering tasks both in the office and field, contributing to the planning, construction, and upkeep of public infrastructure and traffic systems. This role is designed for those at the beginning of their engineering careers, providing essential support to senior engineering professionals.

Key Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of this classification:
  • Assist in the design and formulation of public works engineering plans, including drawings, specifications, and cost assessments, ensuring adherence to relevant regulations and standards.
  • Collaborate on project management efforts, conducting engineering reviews, analyzing designs, and verifying calculations.
  • Review applications and engineering plans for permits, issuing necessary permits for public works projects.
  • Conduct field inspections and coordinate with consultants on various public works initiatives, compiling detailed inspection reports.
  • Perform surveys of municipal properties and rights-of-way for various engineering projects.
  • Draft correspondence and maintain organized project documentation.
  • Address public inquiries and concerns, providing technical support and information as needed.

Qualifications
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience that equips the candidate with the necessary skills and knowledge. Typically, this includes a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related discipline, along with one year of relevant engineering experience. An Engineering in Training (EIT) Certificate may substitute for the required experience. A valid California Class C driver's license is also necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of civil engineering principles and public works construction methods.
  • Familiarity with engineering specifications and construction standards.
  • Proficiency in mathematical techniques applicable to engineering calculations.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering documents and legal property descriptions.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to foster collaborative relationships.

Additional Information
Participation in the California DMV Pull Notice Program is required for this position, which monitors driving records periodically. The physical demands of this role may include walking, sitting, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. The work environment may vary between quiet office settings and moderately loud outdoor conditions.
