Role Overview:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing mechanics and service personnel, coordinating external contract labor; organizing repairs and maintenance for a diverse range of light to heavy machinery; ensuring a work environment that adheres to the highest safety standards and complies with regulatory mandates.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision of Maintenance Staff
  • Oversees mechanics and service personnel.
  • Delegates work assignments and assesses task completion.
  • Investigates and addresses employee conduct issues.
  • Responsible for scheduling time off for shop staff.
  • Evaluates employee performance.
  • Facilitates training for new hires.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources during the hiring process for maintenance roles.
  • Communicates administrative policies and procedures to staff; enforces Collective Bargaining Agreement provisions.
  • Monitors attendance and PTO usage; verifies and approves payroll time sheets.
  • Coordinates external contract labor for specialized projects and evaluates their performance.
  • Conducts daily safety briefings.
Management of Vehicle Repairs and Maintenance
  • Plans and schedules both major and minor repairs.
  • Creates and reviews work orders for vehicle repairs, ensuring accuracy and timely closure.
  • Assigns tasks to mechanics based on work requirements and organizational needs.
  • Makes immediate decisions regarding repairs and occasionally performs on-the-spot repairs.
  • Consults with mechanics on diagnostic procedures and assists with technical inquiries.
  • Generates tracking documentation to ensure timely completion of repairs.
  • Monitors staff performance for quality and efficiency.
  • Collaborates with Parts Clerk to procure necessary replacement components.
  • Determines which vehicles to take out of service and when to restore them.
  • Schedules preventative maintenance for vehicles.
Data Tracking and Reporting
  • Reviews work orders for precision.
  • Monitors the status of inoperable equipment and issues daily reports.
  • Collects and analyzes oil samples for quality assessment.
Additional Tasks and Projects
  • Addresses environmental concerns as they arise.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the work area and facilities.
  • This role allows for significant autonomy in determining work methods and schedules.
Work Relationships:

Engages extensively with internal personnel; collaborates with dispatch, operations supervisors, and road supervisors to facilitate maintenance and repairs.

Interacts moderately with external vendors regarding vehicle maintenance and repairs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Certifications:
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Must hold a valid CA CDL with a clean driving record.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Commercial Driver's License with a Passenger endorsement within 30 days of employment.
Experience:

Journeyman Level Mechanic (A-Rated) with multiple relevant ASE Certifications, particularly in bus and heavy vehicle repair. Preferred

Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Strong verbal communication abilities.
  • Capability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to comprehend and adhere to Material Safety Data Sheets and other safety training materials.
  • Willingness to learn shop processes, including vehicle fueling and cleaning.
  • Ability to mix and utilize various cleaning agents.
  • Proficiency in using equipment such as buffers and scrubbing machines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish) is advantageous.
