Overview:

Position: Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner

Immediate Supervisor: Medical Director and Supervising Physician

Role Overview: This exempt position entails practicing medicine under the supervision of a physician, which includes performing examinations and prescribing medications. Within the physician-physician assistant (PA) dynamic, PAs maintain a degree of autonomy in medical decision-making and deliver a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Responsibilities may span various primary care disciplines, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, as well as surgical and surgical subspecialties. This role may also encompass educational, research, and administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive physical assessments, evaluate health conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and manage illnesses, including administering injections and suturing wounds. Collaborate with physicians as necessary and refer complex cases to them.
  • Ensure continuity of care by monitoring treatment plans.
  • Assess patient inquiries and prioritize patient issues. Respond to emergencies, including performing CPR.
  • Provide guidance to patients and families regarding preventive healthcare.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient information and care in medical records, and may assist in maintaining departmental statistical databases for research purposes.

Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor's degree and successful completion of an accredited physician assistant program.

Experience: A minimum of four years of healthcare experience prior to entering the PA program, plus at least one year of experience as a PA, preferably in a clinical environment.

Certifications: National certification from the National Commission on Certification of PAs is required. To uphold national certification, PAs must complete 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and pass a recertification exam every six years. A state PA license is also mandatory. Current CPR certification is required.

Performance Expectations:

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the medical model and the roles of physicians and physician assistants. Familiarity with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis.
  • Proficient in patient assessment techniques, including taking medical histories, conducting physical examinations, and evaluating health status.
  • Ability to diagnose and treat medical conditions and formulate care plans.
  • Competence in maintaining confidentiality in medical record documentation.
Skills:
  • Expertise in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data.
  • Proficient in evaluating patient issues in person or via phone and providing suitable advice, intervention, or referral.
  • Capability to develop and adjust patient care plans based on patient conditions.
Abilities:
  • Capacity to make informed decisions within the PA's scope of practice.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complex cases.
  • Skill in educating patients, families, and staff in an accessible manner.
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity and full range of motion.

Equipment Used: Medical instruments for physical examinations and minor surgical procedures, as well as computer hardware/software.

Work Environment: Medical office and examination room settings, with frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, and other common clinic conditions. Regular interaction with a diverse group of individuals.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting. May require assistance in transferring patients. The high level of responsibility and workload can induce stress.
